There are many different kinds of prayer in the (for example) Christian tradition. You might be thinking of intercessionary prayer, but there is also contemplative prayer which is indeed a lot more like meditation.

I came here to post "this article is garbage" but I see I have been beaten to it 3 times by the only 3 other comments here. So.

All other arguments aside ... this idea also fails if the judging party's idea of quality is mostly uncorrelated with actual quality. Which Graham says in other essays is usually the case (it's what you mean when you say it's

Only a billion? This is the USA in 2015 we are talking about. A single F-35C costs a third of a billion dollars. So you are talking about 3 planes.

No kidding. I was trying to watch some soccer games in England last month, and it was an exercise in having to fight through the flashing+animated ads around the entire field. I don't think I will ever try watching one of those matches

Part of the reason this is unappealing to consumers is there are actually two layers of bundling here. One layer is the obvious cable TV bundling that most of us probably think is evil and should die. But the second layer of bundling is ESP

Don't presume to give them so much benefit of the doubt. Apparently Stripe are kind of jokers. This incident report reminded me of the 'Game Day Exercise' post from 2014: https://stripe.com/blog/game-day-

Yes, indeed that was a big part of my point! But also , even if I didn't have a choice and had to write the code in C++, I would do it in the style on the slide, not the style endorsed by the link on this HN thread. I do agree that co

Guys, there are errors in this code because I just typed it into a text buffer without ever compiling or running it. It is an example from a slide that I didn't care very much about, for illustration purposes only. If you did that with

I agree! But the first step in a good decision is a clear understanding of the situation, and it is a barrier to understanding to just blanket-decide that procrastination is completely bad without even considering otherwise.

This is one of those cases where science, viewed globally, is being dumb. Is it not consistent with the scientific narrative that procrastination, being a universal behavior, must have been developed evolutionarily for some benefit? It is a

I don't see how you can claim that the idea of wave function collapse here is a misunderstanding. The mathematical meaning of the statement "two things are entangled" is that you cannot factor the states into the product of t

With this scheme you would end up with pretty bad problems regarding function pointers and lambdas. Because the type is deeply implicit, you would have two function pointers that look compatible but are totally incompatible. Then when you w

I also prefer option 3 over option 4. It bothers me that the article recommends exceptions without seeming to understand their drawbacks (the major one: as soon as you use exceptions you suddenly need to apply nonlocal reasoning everywhere

I tried using LibreOffice last year and it was a total joke. Almost nothing worked the way it was supposed to, and it crashed often. When it came time to give my speech and output slides to a projector, that just didn't work at all. My

Everybody who has tried to use const in even medium-sized C++ codebases is familiar with the behavior discussed here. It's not about specific examples, it is about what happens when you have a lot of code.

You might want to read ourincrediblejourney.tumblr.com. Usually this kind of announcement is followed by another one, 9 months-2 years later, of the service being shut down. This is just the first step of that pattern again.
