Maybe I'm just an old fart, but I think it's less misleading to label "not production ready" releases with a 0.x.

True, but a common argument from gun owners is that if you're feeling homicidal, you'll find a way to commit murder with or without a gun. Looking at all homicides vs gun ownership seems to bear that out. In fact, there appears to be a neg

I found Core Worlds to be a disappointment. By the time you can start to build up some interesting combos in your deck, the game is over. Fairly slow-moving, too.

+1 for Power Grid. Like most of the best games, it actually gets more fun once you've figured out optimal play. Weak games just get boring.

Thanks, that does look good! I'm glad there's a new book out, the other books on Scratch look too dry, too outdated, or both. Ordered a copy.

That's exactly why I introduced my kids (10 and 7) to Scratch. But we got to the end of the video tutorials and ... then what? They don't know enough about what's possible to pick a challenge goal and start working towards figuring it out.

Having gone through a company rename with much less history than the PostgreSQL name, I would say this is a shockingly bad idea.

Average latency is NOT correct because YCSB latency is measured per-insert, not averaged over the total runtime. Here is the code from DBWrapper.insert: long st=System.nanoTime(); int res=_db.insert(table,key,values); long en=Syste

This isn't like mongodb's non-durable-by-default writes. No, the "buffering" here is done client-side . So it really wasn't hitting the database at all (until the client teardown phase, well after the latency that is being graphed here w

My reading was that columnar storage was a critical piece of Dremel. "Accessing the same data as Hive" doesn't sound like Impala is doing that. Is that optional then or is this just a query engine?

The main reason Stallman isn't mainstream is not his physical appearance, but his refusal to compromise with potential allies on even minor details. Not to mention a truckload of NIH on the part of the FSF, although you could argue this is

PyCon is still my favorite conference by a long shot. I did think that 2012 felt like it was losing some of the community vibe, with evenings dominated by big sponsor events instead of BoF sessions, but in a way I guess that's a good probl
