A good IDE can help most of the issues you mention. Eclipse is free and you can compile Java web apps in it without Ant. I've worked places whose deployments involved making a WAR file from Eclipse. Configuring Tomcat in Eclipse takes a few

Yeah, but 99.9% of what you want to do with web.xml can be summarized in about 2-3 pages of documentations. It's NOT as complicated as you make it sound. The same goes for JSPs and JSTL. You could have a decent understanding of both techn

It doesn't take me days to get a Java web app up and running. It takes me minutes. In days, my Java web app is done. I'm a senior engineer who codes for pleasure, so maybe I'm faster than average --- but if it's taking you days to get your

That it only took 14 trades to go from phone to Porsche is most impressive. He's gonna have an awesome last year of high school with that ride. Wonder what his insurance costs?

I don't think hackers see value in fake awards. I for one don't see the point, except for the desire to compete to see who's got more badges on their sash. Until these badges can buy me a sandwich, pay my rent, etc, I'll leave them for the

Could we please have less Stack Overflow submissions? That is unless you actually have something new to show us. This site is no different than the Gaming site that was submitted to HN about a dozen times last week. They look the same. They

I find Stack Overflow's new gaming site to be quite underwhelming.

I might be the minority, but I just don't care what Google has to say on Twitter and the whole "visit us on Facebook" thing is just lame. It used to be "visit us on MySpace" and I think it'll be something else in the near future. "Friending

Long domain names aren't good as a rule of thumb just because you don't want people to have to type a bunch or risk misspellings. On mobile devices especially, the less you have to type the better. That said, domains like icanhazcheezburger

I agree that if you build one web app tuned for mobile phones --- it should work for both iPhones and Android phones...as well as for browsers on laptops and desktops. But, HTML5 is nowhere close to supporting the features you need, nor doe

Slow loading websites usually have nothing to do with the adornments of the UI. It's most often all the JavaScript widgets people plug into their webpages (at least from my experience). These widgets use "document.write" to insert content i

Don't instruct people to cut their burgers with a fork and knife! That's like the Seinfeld episode where George cuts his candy bar with a fork a knife. It's "fake" classy. No one actually eats like that. As a side though, anyone want to sta

They probably will. Mint.com still seems focused on the consumer market. They just released a new "Goals" feature which helps you reach your financial goals (like buying a car, a home, etc). Just like with the rest of Mint.com, the Goal con

The JavaScript Anthology is good. It doesn't focus on the language details a whole lot, but gives tons of hands on examples. My copy is battered pretty bad with coffee spilled all over it. That's a good sign. Also, John Resig (of jQuery fam

I've never used WebEx, but GoToMeeting is horrible. Their app/plugin re-downloads EVERY meeting, certain clients of mine behind firewalls can't use it, etc. They are the perfect example of dinosaur screenshare technology.

I'm not confusing anything. The definition of Hacker is strongly about FREE software and being at least somewhat anti-establishment. That kinda goes in the face of the Hacker Group saying you can only post about CASH gigs.

A group looking for "cash only" gigs should not refer to themselves as Hackers. It's not a bad idea, just a poor name choice that doesn't fit your mission.

I second the motion. Sites that force you to use Facebook to login make the Internet sad.
