Hint: they are forced to "not participate", because there are no jobs for them, not because they don't want to work.

Globalization is a wet dream for the ruling class: - global demand markets to sell to - global labor markets to pick from I guess saying that makes me a xenophobe or some such, but I guess I will have to live with it :-)

A few issues though: - more and more capital is being tied up in parasitic activity (encouraged by monetary and fiscal policies), instead of being invested in startups, infrastructure, etc. - all profits/capital gains are distributed t

Explain to me the "value" of Goldman Sachs telling their customers to buy derivatives, while shorting them at the same time. Pretty please.

I do not disagree with you, but at least for me, the most telling is the labor force participation. The fact that we have a close-to-a-record number of people not being productive is alarming. Oh, and I am not buying the "demographics&

Edited my comment to remove the U1, U3 reference, not to confuse everyone. The point still stands, though.

The widely published unemployment number only measures the dynamics of layoffs (how many people became unemployed in the window of the past 6 months). The actual labor force participation is what counts. And therein lies the answer to the &

There is no reason to pierce infant's ears. It can be easily done when one gets older. But your comparison is flawed, because pierced ear holes, if not filled, will easily heal over time, while the circumcision is non-reversible (fores

The hallways of VC offices are littered with corpses of startup founders who did have a better app than Google, but were shown the door, because: you don't want to compete with Google. I should know - I am one of those corpses :-)

While I think the are seriously overpaid, actors/athletes have to fight to stay relevant - they may fall out of favor at any time. CEOs make loads of money regardless of their performance. CEOs are rarely hired by open-market competi

I was really commenting on the part of the title "...a reporting and management problem", and on the comments in this thread splitting hairs over whether it was overbooking or over-selling - and completely missing the bigger point

The airlines can set up any rules they wish (with the FAA being complicit), because they know consumers (passengers) don't have much choice - they need to fly, driving is usually not an option in the US.

No, the real failure (and the source of this and many other issues in the airline industry) is the lack of competition in the US domestic market. Pure and simple. The huge, 350-million US domestic market is served by 4-5 major airlines, wh

OK, so "completely ignore" was an exaggeration. They do talk about opioid abuse as a problem in general, but rarely ever mention that the affected segment of the population is about 65% white male (in West Virginia, not sure about

While always left-leaning, PBS was much more balanced in the past. These days, most of their invited guests are either NYT, or WaPo reporters and they have become - sadly - increasingly unbalanced, leftist propagandists. Being critical of

There is something off with the charts on the site you refer to (they don't provide the actual numbers in the charts). Simple calculation: With $20T of debt, at 3% interest rate (30Y bond), the interest on the debt is adding 600 billio

How about having one of the parents work part-time? True, not all jobs can be offered as part-time, and working part-time limits your career growth if you work for a big corporation, but still, it is a viable option.

You know that Obama de facto stopped - or at least severely limited - Iraqi immigration for 6 months in 2011. There was no outright ban, but the flow of Iraqis slowed significantly. Would you call it a hateful act as well?
