Do you know why in Portugal they have 4 different ID numbers? It is like that to prevent the state from persecuting people on the base that it is hard for a branch of the government to figure out who is someone based on a number from a diff

We don't want to be political here. So, what do we do first? Propose a political solution. We all know how this is going to end, there have been more than enough cyberpunk videogames and novels for us all to read.

Why do developers keep piling abstractions on top of abstractions? There is machine code. Then the assembler. Then the compiler, that targets the JVM. Then the programming language. Then classes and objects. And then modules. And then desig

My little pet peeve with prolog is the lack of context parameters (which can be thought as a type of abstraction). For example, imagine I'm writing a maze solver. The maze solver predicate receives obviously, but it has to pass as a pa

Story is longer than that. Got married. Did't go to the gym for 9 years. Moved countries. Re-taked gym, along with better diet, started on protein powder + creatine. 1.5 years in and I'm already over what I couldn't accomplis

That's what I thought too. But after 5 years of gym, I wasn't neither bigger nor leaner. The diet at home was "good enough" - because every unchecked diet is "good enough", regardless of composition. That'

Sure, because my pre-computed table isn't an array. It's just a bunch of numbers in consecutive positions in memory. That has never been an array. Also, what makes you think I'm not adapting the algorithm? I mean, I set the s

Do that while your mind figures out how to make money work for you. Everything is temporary, even you. You only need enough money for you to live from your 401k/rented houses/investments. Also, be on the lookout for new opportunit

Why do you think this algorithm only applies to arrays? Why do you think this algorithm doesn't apply to this sine lookup table that the compiler placed at the end of the memory in the microcontroller?

So a coworker sends me this CAD file via email, I open it and my computer gets controlled by a botnet, and the file immediately sends itself to all my outlook contacts. Nah, that sounds impossible. I'm sure it has never ever happened.

Is it worth to make the algorithm faster at the cost of throwing surprise OutOfBounds exceptions in some extreme edge cases? Maybe, but only if you - and only you,and not an attacker can control the case you are in.

For tests, first use a real database. If you can't because the database just doesn't want to (ahem mongo ahem) then use a fake. If you can't use a fake, stop lying and use a fake. Mocks for databases are extremely brittle and

I don't think you can have such compiler, at least for a general case, without solving the halting problem first. After all, you can encode arbitrary computations at the type level.

Computers are to manipulate data, not to manipulate a pointer to a pointer to a pointer to a pointer to data. They can do that too, but the cache miss cost already makes that expensive.

Related to workflows: vim, tmux, grep -r for finding stuff in somewhat sane codebases, watch to have unit tests running, minor scripts for everything else.
