It depends on whether the federal government has decided to preempt or not. In this case I don’t think there is a national privacy law that preempts CA, but companies are lobbying now for one to be created. I think it would be a good idea,

Just block your website from being accessed in any country where you aren’t sure you can comply with their laws. A lot of sites are doing that for GDPR.

In cases where the Feds have decided there should be a uniform standard, states can’t make their own law. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_preemption

“six in 10 gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides” This is part of a trend in “deaths of despair” in the last few decades. People are killing themselves more with guns, alcohol, and (especially) drug overdoses. https://www.jec.senat

The “rise of mass shootings” is mostly a media phenomenon. They are still extremely rare events. Gun laws haven’t gotten laxer in the last couple decades either - many states have strengthened them. There isn’t a clear connection between we

RMS hasn’t had a paid job as a programmer for 40 years as far as I know. People say he was homeless and living in his office at MIT while working on GNU in the 80s. Isn’t he basically a speaker and advocate nowadays? That career is unlikely

I am not sure we differ in any more than degree. I agree even in the 20th century the media made mistakes and there were even outright frauds that went on for a while within my memory (Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair, and so on). I mainly wante

The allegation against Minsky were made in a deposition in 2016 though, and I believe that deposition was only unsealed this year, hence making the news this year (leading to the recent resignations at MIT). I don’t think Minsky had a chanc

Online media outlets are well known to lie and often do in cases such as these. They are the yellow press of our day. Unlike 20th century newspapers, they don’t have ombudsmen or public editors who care more about truth than headlines (A tr
