I went deep down the art of code rabbit hole on YouTube, a great channel for learning about shaders. I wrote this blog post on writing interactive SDF shaders: https://jasmcole.com/2019/10/03/signed-distance-f

One application (which I used to work on) is generating electric field strengths beyond the 'Schwinger limit'. This is a field strength below which various QED processes are exponentially damped, such as electron-positron pair pro

Very sad. Reading datagenetics inspired me to start my own blog, which has been very fun over the years. Thanks Nick for the great posts and inspiration!

For long simulations I'd like to increase the timestep, but then RK4 becomes less accurate. For the n body problem, do symplectic integrators work well?

The experiment described here was performed by a couple of groups independently earlier this year. Data is being analysed, so fingers crossed!

Thank you, that's very kind. I'd like to post more often, but real life does tend to throw a spanner in the works!

Hey, author here. As several of you have noted, there are a lot of tweaks to speed this simulation up - making it 2D increases (unphysically) the collision rate, the particles have overly large collision radii, and the fragmentation thresho

Very nice! Are you importing transit data into a 3D renderer, or did you write the rendering code yourself?

As both a pub-loving UK citizen and someone who has just finished the excellent book 'In Pursuit of the Travelling Salesman' (written I think by the authors of this article), this is a highly timely submission!

Thanks for your interest. I'd like a map of earnings by postcode, then I can plot as a function of average yearly wage which would reduce the height of the London mountain in this dataset. There are a lot of goodies in the data provide

Thanks. The video was quite fun to make, I might write up the process in the future. Essentially I made a surface mesh in Matlab, exported to .stl format, which is then importable in Blender. The city names are text objects with a rotation

Thanks! I don't work at all with this type of data though (I'm a physicist), so my interpretation of it will be mostly guesswork I'm afraid (though I welcome learned comments!). The divergence in house prices seems to be real

There is really nothing physically interesting in this - a two lens telescope (in the geometric optics approximation) admits a point where rays from the object are focussed. It's not surprising then that there are regions in between wh

Nice. I had a quick look at this effect in an old blog post, it's surprisingly simple to derive the existence of waves in traffic flow (given some simplifying assumptions) http://jasmcole.com/2014/09/14/o
