Those are radio frequency cavities which accelerate the protons. A standing electromagnetic wave is formed which oscillates at just the right frequency so that the bunches are always accelerated as they pass from one section to the next.

Thanks! And sure, I wrote the initial simulation code in Matlab, which is very simple, just adding 2D arrays which Matlab is fairly quick at. I then saw the traction the blog post was getting, so wanted to capitalise on that quickly. I had

Interesting idea! Maybe you could do it 'live' using a transparent curved display as the shade and a Kinect or equivalent... One thing that also bugged me is the fact that an isotropic light source forms an unevenly-lit image, so
