Start consulting on the evenings or weekends. Even if it's just setting up Shopify stores or making someone a portfolio site. If you don't have any leads, skip Craigslist and Rent-a-Coder and start going to tech/business meetups, asking fri

There's a pretty easy solution if that happens. Host your files somewhere else. Your use of Dropbox (and their decision to allow you to use their service) is on a purely voluntary, at-will basis.

John Cleese did this experiment years ago in his "Wine for the Confused" series.

It's sort of counter-intuitive, but taking responsibility for something (even if it's not directly your fault) often has the effect of deflecting some of the anger from your customers/clients/boss/etc. Personally, I prefer to just get the b

It's not really that different from going to tech meetups or events and meeting people you talk to on HN or Twitter. I guess you just have to accept the reality that if you spend a lot of time online, your persona exists as much on the Inte

I went to the one in New Orleans, I forget which year it was but I think it was the 3rd one? Lowtax wasn't there, but I think a couple of the admins were. It was probably 90% super awkward nerds trying to "hilariously" ask my black friend (

From my understanding, setting leap seconds 20 years in advance is not a good idea either because large earthquakes (such as the recent one in Japan) can change the Earth's rotation speed enough to require an update.

I've never been overly weirded out by meeting people from the Internet (going to Gooncon came close), but I will say it was definitely strange the first time some completely random stranger came up to me in a bar and said "You're Jarin, rig

That's essentially the crux of NoSQL. When your company consists of 90% developers and you're moving at breakneck speed, who wants to wait for Bob the Cranky DB Consultant? Just add another node to the cluster and let the auto-sharding figu

I just chalk it up to the fact that I can't possibly know everything. As long as I'm good at programming and/or business, I'm ok with basking in the glory of science without being an active participant. :)

I don't really mind the redesign since I usually get linked to individual articles instead of browsing around their sites, but that grey line at the "fold" really bugs me. Anyone else get that?

Damn, now I feel like a dummy. I've been thinking about .app for years but I figured it was already in the (super long) process of getting registered.

Yeah, I definitely would like to see a .app TLD and would buy up a bunch of them (as long as they're priced similarly to .com).

I would say yes, especially if you have newer code you can show off as well. Code can always be refactored and improved, but knowing (and making) what users want isn't something they teach in school!

If you don't have that luxury, Sleep Cycle is a pretty good iPhone app for waking up. It attempts to learn your sleep phases via the accelerometer and wakes you up during the closest light sleep period to your alarm time.

You know, I almost wonder if it's intentional. Using an image-based seizure page with a very generic image name prevents search engines from having any content to spider (and thereby prevents people from searching for seized sites).
