I'm not so sure, a bunch of my mainstream friends are freaking out about it. They didn't care about the previous seizures, but once you stop people from playing Internet poker at work everyone turns into a civil rights advocate.

Bcrypt is a good hashing algorithm to use, as you can tailor the difficulty level to find a good balance. A 100ms hashing time probably won't make much of a difference as far as scaling goes (unless your users are actually doing the login p

I think it's good of 37signals to interview someone who had a happy experience NOT following their "run a self-sustaining revenue-based business forever" mantra.

I also call it a "tac". The habit comes from my time in the Navy, where it comes from the naming conventions for compartments (rooms) on a ship. Marines probably call it that for the same reasons, as many of them end up being on a ship at s

You can even use string interpolation in them :) i.e.: :textile Hi, my name is *#{@user.name}*!

Haha, I wouldn't really consider your post "raging" (if it was intended to be, it needs way more hyperbole), it was a response to your comment about the controversial nature.

It seems like it's a localization string identifier, which means it probably stands for a tangible product, and it seems strange that a developer would randomly add and commit that change. I'm going to guess that it was a mis-merge in the A

It amazes me how many developers (even ones who like coffeescript) feel compelled to rage on behalf some hypothetical developer who is capable of learning all of the other stuff in Rails but whose head will explode the moment he touches a .

Just a tip: most of the time, when your haml gets messy, you can clean it up dramatically by using the :textile, :markdown, or :javascript formatters (or just put regular HTML in the :erb or :plain formatters).

I think this would be an excellent way to do it, for the same reason that many online polls don't show the votes until after you vote.

I have noticed that my karma per post has gone down quite a bit (something that would normally get 7-8 upvotes is getting maybe 1-2 or none). I think it's an example of people thinking "well, someone else has probably voted that up and that

I think it would be useful to see the number of upvotes and the number of downvotes instead of the total score (or possibly a percentage instead of a hard number). That way, you can see whether a comment is at -2 points because it's bad, or

I've seen that, but I wonder why it says "not recommended for serious use". If it's just slower, I'd be ok using it for simple things, but if it's buggy I'll just use BistroCar.

It really doesn't take much to gain basic proficiency with SASS, as long as you know how to use the tab and delete keys (or the sass-convert tool). With SCSS it's even easier, just rename the file and refactor it later if you're feeling laz

From what I understand, the SCSS syntax is mainly just for compatibility with CSS. I'm sticking with SASS as long as it's officially supported, since I like getting rid of all of the curly braces and semicolons.

I think it is requiring the user to make a choice that is antithetical. You can change pretty much all of the defaults in Rails.

One of the core strengths of Rails is that it is highly opinionated. That's why people talk about doing things "the Rails way". You can always change things if you like (a lot of people change the views to Haml, UJS library to jQuery, and t

Rails is a pretty huge learning curve in and of itself, as most developers need to learn MVC, unit testing, migrations, activerecord, callbacks, filter chains, routing, erb, view helpers, partials, layouts, etc. Of course, all of this stuff

You always have to be willing to walk away. If you're early in your career, this means building up your skills (and certs, if you're in IT) to the point where you feel very confident that you can get another job quickly if necessary. If you
