This should be said more often, and in many other contexts as well. Most educational resources are what- and how-based, only the best ones are primarily why-based, what Wirth once wrote in the preface to some Pascal book (I paraphrase)

Thanks. I myself guard against reading Claudism/AIisms since these will, over the long run, affect my own style. GIGO. But it's not practical or always possible to avoid reading AI-writing, so to counter that, I've been binge

great post. I also like the author's writing style-- he/she really knows how to write well.

This is great. I wonder if anyone would write a 'how to program + CS' book using Julia. Python has a dozen. Julia only has one ( Think Julia but this book is just a presentation of syntax and doesn't teach how to program.).

Julia would have seen more adoption with: --> proper learning resources for beginners, but also for intermediate and advanced users. As of now resources are relatively sparse, compared to what you would find in the Python world. --> a

"“It's not clear what exactly the end goals are, as the information appears to be publicly accessible anyway.”" Eh, just another day in the La-la land of a clueless AI bot hallucinating? Or maybe not!

The move to native makes sense. Also, human developers and AI make different types of mistakes, and take different approaches to debugging. I'm not saying they shouldn't have done that, it's just that a more human-involved ap

My comment may have been too terse. I didn't mean I didn't enjoy or else I wouldn't have played. I did, but it became stale after so many games and regularly defeating 2000+ opponents in bullet chess. The time and energy need

Eh.. it did not originate in chess, this Zugzwang. It's a fairly well-known mathematical entity, goes by the name of Optionality. If you need to fly tonight, and the airliner knows it, they can charge you very high prices: you have no

I live my life such that the boundary between fun, work and thinking is usually fuzzy and blurred. So, while I did play chess for fun, after a while it became boring--but I also impute this to my ADHD, perhaps for others it might not stale.

Where I live even 8-yo's have nasty patterns. But it's generally less so, I agree.

Yeah I have ADHD and can't bother play slow, long games. I only play bullet (60 sec) and would often defeat 2200-level players before I decided to give up. That means, most of those I will play (socially) in the future won't beat

I do like physical competitiveness as well-- I did box in my teens, and basketball for decades. It depends on the video games, too.

I got to a 1900 bullet rating in two years, playing an average of 10 to 30 games a day--while not learning any theory! (I wanted to discover theories on my own). And that's when I realized nah, it's not worth it. That's a gre

It will take the thinking persons a while to realize that like the utility curve for wealth, the utility curve for modernity also has decreasing marginal returns: A basic bit of modernity is very useful, but as we become more modern, it bec

I am a fairly good player but after playing 22000 games, I came to the conclusion that ideas and strategies from chess are context-dependent and don't much transfer to real life. I'd rather spend all that time reading up on game t

NMS gameplay is just too lonely and when i used to play it, it would reinforce my sense of extreme loneliness (I was single, and a foreigner in the Far East). Minecraft is another game that made me feel utterly depressed due to the lonelin

I'll save you the time and effort. No. Stories are always based on realities experienced by the authors, either personally, or viscerally. AI has no experience of this kind. The experiences then are assembled or re-assembled into an ar

Practical advice: - put a lot of 'teaching' into the book. Don't write so the learner memorizes; instead, motivate each discussion so that the learner understands, and gains what Wirth calls _coverage_. - ensure there are n
