Check out Trestle: https://www.trestleapp.com/services/custom we're already running custom NodeJS code for our customers - along with the 14 other API services we have (including our Chain server) you can do a ton. It all is tied in to o

The 5 second restriction is only on our Custom NodeJS service - that doesn't apply to the Chain Server. For the custom service that can be increased if needed, we just want to try to limit any runaway processes. The DB backend (Object Data

Completely - the only part that's hard is conditionals - what if you want to check the success/fail of a link in the chain? You'll have to bring the results back to your client. The Trestle Chain server let's you create if/else conditionals

I'm the co-founder of Trestle (Brian), and this is something that my partner Sham and I struggled with as well as we both have created apps that relied heavily on a server backend. With the Chain Server you basically bundle your API calls i

I like this - and just because you start small doesn't mean you can't think big in the long term. Small but steady growth goes a long way towards building a lasting business too.

A nice long list of things all concisely put into one blog - I'm sure this took some time to write. Can we move on though? Seriously - no one's forcing you to use PHP, so in your own worlds "It has paltry few redeeming qualities and I wou

What about a "community" section that was home to Show HN, Ask HN - basically posts for the HN community? I think that's actually a great idea...

Maybe if everyone did follow the advice and "launch early" then some of us would realize we really DID launch too early and the popular idea of launching early would lose some of it's appeal? I believe there is a growing number of startups

Spot on - in fact I wonder if YC would be open to "funding" more groups if some of those groups didn't need the money? For us it's about the network like you pointed out.

You are so right - I like to think of it as accepting responsibility for your life. Several hundred years ago "starting your own company" could be equated to "going west and creating a new life" - it takes a lot of guts and determination t

When I quit my full time job in 2005 I can't tell you how many people thought I was seriously crazy to leave a "stable" job to do something on my own. For me however, it really wasn't a choice - it was something I had to do. I've always be

I live just north of Seattle, WA. I worked at VZW for almost 10 years, but early on decided I wanted to run my own business so basically saved as much as I possibly could - my goal was to have 2 years of "wages" which would give me time to

I'm 41, married, and have 3 kids - my "cofounder" and I have just applied to YC for Summer 2012. I've been running in "start up" mode since around 2000, so my lifestyle has adjusted to a much lower level of pay than I would expect had I co

This is what I really want to believe - that technology will ride in and save the day. I even think it is likely that new tech will emerge that can do it, but (and maybe this is my cynicism showing through) I believe powerful interests tha

I agree about the global warming. My worry is that continued political pandering and posturing (at least in the US) will result in an effective "stalemate" that prevents anything from being done about it until it becomes undeniable to thos

I've personally used Percona/XtraDB quite a bit - if you are used to MySQL it is pretty much a drop-in replacement (i.e. you won't need to rewrite any queries). One nice feature is the ability to do hot backups without locking tables, usin

I agree - I have a lot of nostalgia over this, as we had a complete set of the 1921 edition - reading though that to see just how much the world had changed (and this would have been in the 80's) was fascinating.

Thanks for this - this is good advice. Using a port over 1023 doesn't make sense and isn't necessary - the idea is to just change the port from the normal 22. Thanks!
