Just to build off this a little, there are also quite a few examples of cases in which Apple "sherlocked" an app and the original app(s) continued being successful as they offered a much more advanced feature-set than the basic ve

Yeah frustrating process for sure, I wasn't necessarily challenging those aspects, just that I hadn't seen many companies distributing mac apps through the mac app store (for many of the reasons above).

Sorry but this isn't true in my experience, I've worked on 3 different native macOS apps at different companies in the last few years and all were signed, notarized and then distributed with Sparkle. At least one of those has pret

Notes has become one of the better (best) first-party software offerings from Apple. They seem to have a really good team working on it.

While I agree everyday is too frequent. Too infrequent release cycles also lead to poorer quality software as the gap between implementing a feature and getting it into user’s hands widens. You generally want that context to be fresh enough

Yes, I cancelled my subscription a while ago, I can't tell if it's getting objectively worse or I just ran up against the limitations in using it for software development. I spent so much time correcting code it had written or get

I think apps like Opal use a combination of screen time APIs and abusing Shortcuts, might be something similar.

My partner is a data engineer, from what I’ve gathered the departments are often very small or one person so the roles end up blending together a lot.

Should be possible using AX APIs on mac, might not be all that performant, however.

Yes that part I don’t really care about, it’s pretty easy to point to misinformation on the internet. I think the part of your original comment that sticks out to everyone is your idea that generally, over hydration is more of a risk than d

Are you talking about hyponatremia? That’s going to be very rare if you’re healthy. Also your source is an analysis of articles on water drinking advice, not a medical study.

Yeah, some tools are built for complex, niche workflows and as a result need to have information and control density. You can't design away the learning curve in these cases and probably shouldn't try to or you'll harm the pr

This isn't an artist building on the work of previous artists, this is a for-profit company repurposing people's work and mass producing it without permission or paying royalties.

No, there is wider a context and nuance to the whole topic, as there always is. Jumping to hyperbolic "slippery slope" arguments doesn't add anything interesting to this discussion and instead tries to deflect it.

It’s also gotten so expensive and unreliable that some people I’ve spoken to are just driving again instead whereas years ago they would have always gone by train. I can’t help but feel that the weird ownership model contributes to this and

I think so too, I also saw it as a lesson on careful and methodical debugging. I've been in situations like the one written up, trying to debug something tricky where each team member is coming up with multiple wrong hypotheses and mis

Yes, SwiftUI, Swift Concurrency and to an extent SPM have been quite frustrating. SwiftUI on macOS in particluar is a major step backwards from AppKit as it is right now.

I can recommend the podcast series blowback if anyone wants a deeper look into the knock-on effects of western intervention in the middle east and elsewhere. Also, the book the Jakarta method for a broader look.
