In both my last job (latexsearch.com) and my current job (smarkets.com) I've worked with couchdb in fairly large scale installations. I haven't experienced a single bug nor had any couchdb-related performance problems. It's pretty solid.

The majority of the data for the smarkets.com betting exchange is stored in couchdb. Asynchronous calls and cache purges are handled by rabbitmq. The entire backend is written in erlang. This is far from a pet project. Online betting is a h

One could choose to use it to excuse one's failings but that doesn't make the argument invalid. You have to understand your enemy. I know I am incredibly absent-minded. I've learnt through such reading that this is not a failing of willpowe

The general lesson is that randomized algorithms often remove the need for synchronization between concurrent processes. For example, choosing ids at random from a large space rather than coordinating to choose unique ids.

Cutting the brake lines leaves physical evidence of sabotage. Messing with the computers is a lot harder to spot. Do police even check for this sort of thing? Would they know how to?

I'm aware of that. My point was that rather than just look at the potential problems it should be viewed as a tradeoff. Hiring a larger group of people is less risky but will cost you more.

> "What happens if you get hit by a bus?" Put it this way: by hiring an unneeded developer you are betting circa $100k a year that you will be hit by a bus. From that point of view it seems like a losing bet.
