I wish Leiningen would also handle bleeding edge dependencies as easily as rebar eg: {deps, [ {quoted, "1.0.3", {git, "git://git.corp.smarkets.com/quoted.erl.git", {tag, "1.0.3"}}}, {proper, ".*", {git, "gi

In the light of recent UK news, I suspect someone could make good money by selling a user-friendly browser plugin that proxies connections to blocked sites like the pirate bay. Of course, you probably don't want to be living in the UK whils

I have had this problem before, usually when using a repl that gets abnormally terminated. I don't know exactly what causes it and I haven't been able to replicate it deliberately. Long commands alone don't seem to trigger it.

A copying gc helps with that somewhat. When the young generation gets copied you only pay for data that is still alive, not garbage generated. I believe erlang uses mark-and-sweep rather than copying though.

Erlang disallows shared memory in favour of per-process gc. Whether or not this is a good tradeoff in general is debatable but it is what makes the gc acceptable in soft-realtime environments. Go makes a different set of tradeoffs (shared m

After a couple of years of writing erlang full-time, tying mailboxes to processes is one of the things that really bugs me. It conflates mutable state, addresses and queues into one construct. Using channels allows multiple writers/readers

A nice extension of this is to use exponentially distributed delays. Then reoccurring events form poisson processes which are really easy to reason about when composed eg if you have N servers firing off events at the same exponentially dis

Not really. All the writes go through a single server (which can have a hot failover). If you can't talk to that server then you can't write. In theory it should still be able to handle at least the same write load as a traditional db whils

As I understand it, datomic sacrifices write availability by serialising all writes through a single server.

The Tribler bootstrap servers are not single points of failure. To bootstrap you just need to know the address of a single non-NATed peer. If the Tribler servers went down anyone else could setup their own and publicise the addresses. The o

The FAQ says that writes favour consistency over availability, so I guess that means synchronous calls to the transactor.

The linked paper shows how the klein bottle maps onto the space. Basically, grids which have an orientation (horizontal or vertical stripes) are more common and join together to form a klein bottle. That tendency towards orientation might b
