Great, great article. I'd like to add: This, I think, is one of the big reasons why startups prefer hiring young people (ie, recent grads) - young people just don't know any better. They have the barest idea (if any) what dilution

What else is opportunity cost in this case but risk that an early employee at a startup misses out on a much better financial endpoint at a non-startup with much higher salary and benefits (401k matching, etc)?

Very helpful insight, thanks. To summarize - the value added services of billing, monitoring and dispute resolution make it worthwhile for the contractor to use the service.

How can you build a platform that doesn't race to the bottom but allows it to extract the value added (and hence profits) from collecting and vetting great talent? I always imagine the interaction with supply (quality freelance develop

To me, this doesn't look as horrible as the article makes it out to be. I get a ~90 day notice that my job is ending, during which time I continue to work the same hours and have time to apply to other positions inside and outside of D

Not sure how Ruby the language is unique here. Doesn't the rest of the statement apply when you substitute any other language?

Agree with all the responses to my top level comment, in that management is ultimately responsible for setting and maintaining the engineering culture. It can be tough, however, to balance competing (tensioned) requirements - if you have to

Love this article, but I'm not sure the origin of the sloppy practices described there always originates with the VP/Eng, CTO or CEO. I've worked with plenty of engineers who just don't want to write tests, or tighten up

Does anyone else feel like this is reinventing the JVM Garbage Collection technology - which has at least 20 years of calendar experience and countless man hours of engineering research in the real world? Whatever your thoughts are on Java

Complete noob (to hardware/ARM stuff) question: Why would I buy this over the much cheaper Raspberry Pi 2? Does it just have a (much?) faster processor?

I read this as beneficial to the wireless data carriers. Toward the bottom: "there will be no rate regulation, no tariffs, no last-mile unbundling" Meaning no more MVNOs and no more competition other than the "big 4&qu

Thanks - you captured a good part of my argument. I'd make a small correction though. I don't consider it "trading" as much as "investing". As a former quant trader and a current (and forevermore) value investo

Interesting, as that's very much how my mental model of how Rails works: 1. The routing layer is all about declaring a resource which gives you all 7 major REST operations, and 2. there's a nice facility for responding_to any data

Holy cow this is an awesome concept. Haven't tried it yet, but if it works it's completely transformative. Can be used as a teaching tool for anything - not just for pair programming. Very, very cool! Thank you for charging money
