I think a lot of it had to do with being locked into your carrier. It was expensive to leave because you had to pay that early cancellation fee and two of the carriers are CDMA, two are GSM so you potentially had to get another phone. With

Yeah, it's pretty bad. American telcos operate on their own terms and most people don't seem to care. It's one of those household jokes. Everyone knows they suck but everyone needs data and coverage, no viable competition in

I understand and had that idea when I heard it needed sudo initially. It makes sense for a reference-ish implementation to make it quick and easy for the large userbase to adopt. If I had to trust an org to run their code as sudo on my rig,

I use acme-tiny[0] and it was pretty simple to setup. The letsencryptclient requires running as root and quite a few dependencies if I remember correctly. I have acme-tiny run with its own private user privilages monthly in a cron job and i

If you're talking about https://fdroid.eutopia.cz/ , I don't think that's the same thing. This isn't Moxie's and because of the name change, not completely moxie's code unless he's got a bu

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't he host a private repository like the Guardian Project does with his own binary signed with his own key? People would have to manually add the repo, but I believe F-droid lets you do that. Fdr

I think offline encryption works fine if your XMPP server implementes XEP-0198[0]. Prosody doesn't out of the box, but there's a community plugin available[1] for it. The plugins are really easy to install if you're running p

This is true, but it still costs you 300 dollars a year, uses the same mechanisms the market uses (no loose .ipas) and you have to give lots of trackable info to Apple (company info, devices, apps, update/use metrics). It's all ce

I think having a publicly available history link that displays every TOS and Privacy Policy and the dates they were inforce isn't too much to ask. Maybe a last ten years thing is applicable (not retroactive). Users don't keep copi

I would love for this to be an issue consumers could spearhead, but most consumers only care about things like this once they get into legal trouble. It's the same issue with prisoner's and privacy rights. I try to avoid mandatory

I guess that depends on how you got your phone. Manufacturers make carrier-specific hardware a lot of the time since carriers buy in bulk. This is slowly going away in the US with most companies switching to pre-paid and BYOD plans, but sti

I think this is being kind of pedantic. I don't think DRM should be banned and I don't think most people do. I just don't think it should be facilitated on the web or legally protected against tampering. It's one thing t

I know a lot of the Chromebooks allow swapping out the mSata pretty easily. I've done it with my C720, swapped in a 128gb. I know the new Pixel is more locked down than the last, but haven't looked into it enough to say.
