This is buying into the idea of rugged individualism when it comes to parenting. That all a child needs is their parents and that time away from children is a failure of parents. This couldn't be further from the truth. Many studies sh

There is a difference between blocking people who are disruptive, annoying, etc. And then blocking anyone who doesn't agree with you or levees any amount of criticism of your work. At some point surrounding yourself with only yes men w

Yeah he's always been block happy for ANY amount of criticism. Really seems like this guy is more interested in looking like a good person for making this app.

Yeah it's like saying "home invaders don't know if there is anything good inside they just choose houses at random." The point of the theft is to get something out of it.

According to the GSMA last year phone theft (which arguably has much more part serialization and anti-theft measures implemented) has been a steady 1% of smart phone users worldwide. It does not seem these attempts to lock down systems are

Only if you look at appliance official support windows. In terms of energy consumption, efficiency, noise, storage area, weight, and regular maintenance modern appliances are pretty amazing.

Kind of an apples and oranges comparison though. Analog and simple digital thermostats are very simple while something like the nest is running 32-bit OS. Complexity increases cost.

Good to see someone jump on these early with FOSS. Seems pretty early days for the this OS and the tech though. No device has full support yet. I'm still not convinced smart glasses are going to have any staying power either.

It's like buying a hammer with only one head and saying to use a crowbar if you want to remove a nail. You can get both in one. Overwhelming majority of people don't need or want to carry around a DSLR or know how to use it. They

That's been the biggest upgrade for me on the beta. Loved that about Pixel phones but hated how locked down Pixels are for an Android phone. Honestly confused by Samsung hasn't rolled out something similar. There was talk of them

This is all true if you only look at 1-2 countries. However taking the rest of world into account and this quickly falls apart. In China for example you can use a custom rom and still use digital payments like Alipay no problem.

Agreed, this post is overly verbose for no real purpose and makes several claims that are laughable. It reads like a the position of someone inside the tempest in a teapot.

They really don't. It's just that development of custom roms like GrapheneOS are centered around Pixels. Plenty of other devices have unlockable bootloaders. The custom rom scene though is so small that concentrating on a couple d

There is a reason for the rise of the far right in the west. Fascism for sure isn't the answer though. It's taking all the wrong lessons.

I think a lot of that dissonance comes from the adversarial framing that is always pushed about China. That it's China vs the US or China vs the west. Americans especially have grown up with the idea that communist china is terrible an

The thing is making a smart phone is hard. You need experienced and knowledgable embedded engineers to design every aspect of the phone. You need people who are knowledgable about RF and know how to go about regulations in various countries

I don't think so. There are still plenty of devices and apps that can be unlocked and run custom roms on. But there is barely any developers working on it. Custom roms were always a power user method to give themselves more functions.

I can't read their mind. They mentioned revanced, so I addressed it. I absolutely see the issue and agree that there are instances where not being able to side load would be massively detrimental. I've never disagreed with that.

I feel like that makes the most sense. That this isn't something Google thought up but something that the EU wanted to ensure its government ID app was "safe". Google does benefit but the timing seems to line up.
