I tend to romanticize CLI as a universal and think of GUIs as niche, so it struck me odd to see CLIs referred to that way. That's not a character judgement. I'm actually curious what you mean by niche. Would you mind elaborating?

I love it when people are simultaneously needlessly condescending and also wrong.

For precisely the reasons you listed, this entire article, but especially the headline, are safely labeled click bait. Everything about it is technically accurate but it's carefully designed to be misleading so passersby think "th

Thank you for this. I skimmed it while on a call, and this seems like a really good breakdown. I look forward to absorbing it with my full attention later.

When it's somewhat irrelevant to focus on the hard things, which are more appealing, I find it's frustrating not being motivated to solve the more pressing, easier issues because they're not "fun"

Heh, my degree is in journalism. It's been a weird ride, but I wouldn't trade it for the shiniest CS education.

Pattern recognition and analogy are my secret weapons, for sure. I'm really only a good engineer because I'm good at organizing and communicating my thoughts. It's the only reason I've made it so far in my career -- defi

On behalf of my fellow English majors, may I just say: What?? I love Hacker News because it exposes me to a great deal of things like this. I intend to do as deep a dive I can muster into the provided lecture notes. But boy howdy, are certa

This is a community of people whose career revolves around precise language. You knew because you're intelligent and were able to piece things together. Many in society are not so fortunate for one reason of another and so it's im

Do you intend to give the air of smug self importance? It's tacky. I would expect someone so clearly intelligent to know a rhetorical question when they use it.

No, but the issue is assuming anyone wants to hear what you think about it. The pile of shit in the authors life are people who claim to be too busy. He's just saying he doesn't like it. So you're the same.

It's rather funny you seem to make the case that you can't generalize an entire population based on the actions of individuals, then go on to... generalize entire populations based on the actions of individuals.

Totally agree! I am a bash fanboi with a fish fetish, but recently started in a windows shop. I've actually grown quite fond of the flexibility powershell offers, and how usable it is without requiring esoteric knowledge.

When did I say it's a foreign concept? I said it's not common knowledge for five year olds, and in reply, someone stated it's "always" mentioned. I was simply demonstrating that it's not "always" ment

Sure, I can look it up (and I did) but this is a discussion section, so why not prompt a discussion by asking for a simple explanation? Appreciate the link! I'm not OP but that's exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not sure five year olds know what microcode is. I'm 35, been in tech nearly 20 years and don't recall having heard that specific term before today.

It doesn't have _literally_ nothing to do with it; there is a correlation, even if a weak one. The two are just independent. I'm not disagreeing with your point just nitpicking word choice; the best kind of annoying comment!
