It's a good thing the iPad does have excellent battery life because in our family, it's being used almost all day long. The other night I completely lost my wife and daughter for hours as they played Plants vs Zombies together way past bed

Yes, it's all about hardware and that's not going to change, despite the author's arguments otherwise. PCs aren't going anywhere either. Offices will continue to use PCs even if the consumer market switches to mobile phone/tablet devices.

No, the exit tax can be pretty bad: "The so-called ‘mark-to-market' tax will apply to the net unrealized gain on the expatriate's worldwide assets as if such property were sold (the ‘deemed sale') for its fair market value on the day before

Jamie Zawinski was an early Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, and XEmacs developer. He now runs a nightclub: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Zawinski

I was hoping for someone who actually tries to sleep somewhere different every night. Reminds me of a friend who tries to never order the same thing twice at any restaurant. Doesn't take too long before that becomes difficult, but any tim

Our first app was approved within hours, but that was within the first two months of the App Store. Still, we've generally had very fast turn around on our apps.

It's even worse because, while I agree with the premise that Java is more relevant than many think, the author never even attempts to make the case. There's no discussion of why Java is relevant.

One way to marginally improve the common password strength is to at least add the name or the URL of site to it. So if the password is 123456 then the hackernews password might be 123456news.ycombinator.com.

I wonder how much of the MySpace shot effect is due to age. I'm guessing that those who take the MySpace shot would more likely be younger and in a generation which finds online social networks second nature.

I still prefer a desktop client (well emacs gnus). I like access to my email when I'm offline and traveling, which is often. I prefer the speed of processing email locally and the integration I can have with other local tools and scripts.

Setting up a 501(c)3 isn't a picnic either. That's why a lot of open source projects join an existing foundation instead of starting their own.

I don't mind a short screencast. In some cases, they can be particularly useful. However, they should never replace written documentation.

Not only stop reading Hacker News (and reddit or similar), but block them in your hosts file so that you can't even cheat. Reading fiction, taking nature walks without your cell phone, or, perhaps best of all, practicing insight meditation

Only geeks see it as a platform. The current Google Wave client feels like a single, unified application just like GMail (compared to a platform like 'email'). The current wave client _is_ the killer app.

Have you ever tried to use forums or Google Groups in a Fortune 500 company? Plenty of office workers have trouble with basic email. Getting them to use a forum or Google Groups is a lot of work for an IT staff. This is why you have prod

I think you're mixing up wave. Wave _is_ an actual application, not a protocol. It uses several protocols to get its job done, but it _is_ an application. And the wave code is already public: http://code.google.com/apis/wave/

I use Chinese pinyin phrases, then substitute some numbers for good measure. Example: The phrase: "How are you" is 你好吗? Romanized, that becomes ni3 hao3 ma3. So a password might be ni3hao3ma3 or n13h403M43.

The client has to have a public internet port available for XML-RPC or an HTTP post. The central cloud server sends pings to all of the subscribers. It's a bad idea. If you're going to do this, just use XMPP. Otherwise, use HTTP the way i
