If there's a $1.99 "20 additional game levels" after you finish the first 20, that's not scummy. If there's a $99 in-app purchase (Basket of Smurfberries), that's scummy.

I've had that conversation. I'm so glad my youngest is 8 now. Yes, I wish all the apps that make their money from free + in-app purchases would just give me an option to buy the whole thing for a one-time price.

There are indicators that apps have in-app purchases but most kids and parents don't notice them. In-app purchases require you to enter your iTunes account password so it's generally hard to accidentally buy something. The problem is that o

Generally good advice. Play-testing with young kids is a big help. I also don't like an app that has the kid shake the iPad (or iPhone) a lot. I'm torn on the "Don't trick my kids into buying stuff" one. I've seen a lot of crappy apps (and

Draw Something (like Pictionary) is in a sweet spot. To begin with it's a game and people play with their friends. They leverage Facebook to find your friends that have the app already. You can still invite people that don't have it yet, bu

Flashblock still loads the plugin and content, doesn't it? I don't run Flashblock, but does this still work: http://hackademix.net/2008/06/08/block-rick/ I disable plugins in Chrome and either whitelist sites or run them as-needed.

I just launched my first iOS app a few days ago. The marketing is probably at least half the work. We're in the education space and it's been a little hard really developing contacts and getting attention without an app, so we built a fairl

I wish they'd do something to encourage the 'team' aspect. Too many people just rack up their own personal score or work on individual achievements. They could slightly increase drops for being on the winning team or open up some new team-b

I keep it disabled in Chrome and selectively enable it for sites I trust or as-needed. I'm glad to see that it's less necessary over time.

It worries me that so many people are jumping into the app business. There are "Moms With Apps" - stay-at-home moms outsourcing development of their ideas. There are the "make money" schemers selling their info products. It feels a bit like

It's not that bad. A little verbose, but it's not like switching from C to Lisp or Prolog.

Yes. I was hoping someone would find out the pricing but I guess it's safe to assume that it's outrageous.

It's not an end-user device yet. A lot of people are jumping on this as a cheap media center PC and they'll be disappointed. But there are plenty of us that want to stick a battery pack on it and put it in a robot or something more fun.

I'll have to look for that. My in-laws give me a Best Buy card every year for Christmas and half the time I use it to buy their Christmas gift the next year. Amazon gift cards get spent right away.

Well to start with, they went to MacWorld and previewed the app there. I don't follow the space much, but I think the company was somewhat well-known already for Mac apps.

Ahh, ok. I'm not sure you get the more average university experience then. I spent 5 years at a fairly large research state university without ever having a class from the department head, despite the fact that his main focus was also AI. I

I got this earlier in the week. I initially couldn't get the final 500MB but the trick is to upload a single 500MB+ video by itself. The free space is great, but the photo upload is a decent feature. It's not as useful to me because I shoot

There are lots of ways to homebrew variable capacitors. A sheet of glass and two pieces of scrap copper does well. I have a "crystal" radio (uses a modern diode) all built on a paper towel tube. The coil is wound on the tube like usual but
