I'm generally a Linux user, but I've grown to appreciate OS X's keyboard shortcuts. Cmd-C will copy text on just about any OS X app including the terminal and emacs. On the Linux terminal, you have to use Ctrl-Shift-C to copy (to avoid se

Silly question: If I'm understanding this correctly, doesn't this essentially mean that statistically it's possible to live forever? Or is there a point when you statistically have 100% probability of dying?

I have a confession to make. I voted this article up simply based on the title. Even if it turned out to be incredible link bait (which it didn't), I'm just happy that someone out there is at least recognizing the desire to have a reasona

I would probably correct the title to "Things I hate about enterprise Object-Oriented Programming", as that seems to be the gist of this.

Wouldn't this work? I can't test it at the moment. print_function = lambda c: getattr(colored, c) printred = colored.print_function("red") printred("This prints in red")

Neither would I. But some people are stuck in jobs where they have to support Windows. If that's never been the case for you, consider yourself lucky.

What if your package manager doesn't support the version of Python you're targeting? The most common place this happens is if you have some old RHEL 5 boxen that haven't been upgraded (and who that uses RHEL doesn't?). Or suppose you use

So much to say here. I think this is an important issue. Being kid-like is central to being creative. But at the same time, being adult-like is central to being productive. The key isn't to become a creative kid who does nothing product

I generally think of it this way: a manager tells you what you have to do. A tech lead tells you what you'd be stupid not to do. You won't have much formal authority. At the same time, you hopefully won't be under much formal author

I personally find "not in" to be a bit more readable. If I say: if not x in y: ... Do I mean: if (not x) in y: ... Or: if not (x in y): ... Same with "is not".

You never know. I'm sure you could have a more "distributed leadership". I'm sure this could be accomplished with a clever enough application of paxos.

Well, now we're getting into the theoretical issues. For instance, if we develop wormhole technology, the ship could very well be there before the enemy can see it. Otherwise, I just don't see interstellar space warfare as being that pract

I admit to skimming this, but there are a couple of things I see wrong with this. 1. You can see a spaceship from the next solar system for sure. But it would take years for you to see it. 2. I doubt the future of combat will involve hum

This is a strawman. Clearly mhartl is doing something good for society. If his goal in helping society is so that he can build a pool of money he can dive into like Scrooge McDuck, why do you care? Is helping society only good if the per

Perhaps I'm missing something here. Argument 1 seems to basically be that Java code is bigger than Lisp code. Argument 2 is that big code bases tend to use all of a language's features. Why couldn't you solve the second problem with the

This is why Lisp is a HackerLanguage instead of a commercial language: hackers are generally loners who don't care if others can figure out their code (at least while they are in the mode or role of hacking). Thus, they build their own lit
