Murder is usually an act of weakness, not courage.

It's pretty elegant in principle, but you might lose whatever usability points you gain with the multi-use form by having to explain to the user that it's meant for both signup and login. I can't think of a really simple way to do that.

Point taken. I suppose for some it's a matter of degrees -- determination doesn't imply being an asshole, but sometimes really pushing yourself can lead you to take energy from the things you'd be doing to make the people around you happy a

Thanks for finding that. I thought this was interesting: "I used to be really easy, always happy and always laid back as an 8-5'er working for the 'man,' but now I realize I have actually become sort of an asshole. Unfortunately, the realit

I suppose I didn't explicitly say that "young pg" would be into hero worship, but I didn't mean to imply the opposite -- I just thought it was a silly thing to be talking about. I was trying to reframe the argument and I guess I didn't succ

I don't agree with him -- I have a ton of respect for pg (and I happen to really like this word cloud), but I'm relatively new here and I didn't want to act like I was speaking for people who've been following his work longer and more close

I'm not really one of the people to whom the question is being posed, but my guess is 23-year-old pg would be too busy working on his startup to care about, let alone get "sick" about, what complete strangers choose to spend their time bein

It's not really the same, because everyone is exposed to design all the time, whereas only coders ever look at code. It's more like being able to tell if music is good -- most people have a decent sense for it, but a musician's taste is a l

I would use this. It'd be cool if the blog posts are voteable so that the really interesting ones can bubble up to the front page as actual news.yc entries.

Quickly building up a portfolio and applying for gigs worked well for me. One thing I noticed was that small companies and startups are impressed if you've built one or two cool apps whereas larger companies are more interested in the size

That's good to hear -- I ran a paper in college and it was an awesome experience. This is such a hugely transformational period in publishing that knowing the ins and outs of the business makes you aware of how many opportunities there are

I don't think the article makes enough sense to be called socialism. It sounds more like what would happen if you gave a 12-year-old a copy of Google's mission statement and a Wikipedia article about Joseph Schumpeter and said, "Misundersta

I was thinking the same thing. It wasn't too long ago that the only mainstream coverage of this stuff was the occasional Kurzweil-centric fluff piece along the lines of "Hey, this crazy guy says we'll live forever soon." I wonder if the sin

It's wrong to say technology is making thought more shallow. What's happening is the digestion of information is becoming a heavily collaborative process instead of a strictly personal one.

I'd recommend a listing on the 37signals Job Board ( http://jobs.37signals.com/ ). It costs $300 for a 30-day job listing or $100 for a gig listing, but it'll get you by far the highest quality crop of applicants.

I really like the idea, but are you sure you'd be able to sell enough milk and cookies to make up for the cost of running the place? Seems like the only way to make it work would be to sell "gourmet" cookies and overprice them, and that kin

That's what the "less" implies, though, isn't it? "n times less" always means 1/n times as much (i.e., smaller by a factor of n).

I started making a simple app that scrapes your (or any other user's) HN activity and turns it into an RSS feed, but I didn't finish it, partly because I don't post here much. Following multiple users is a cool idea that didn't occur to me,
