What would you say those cities' messages are? (I'm especially interested in Amsterdam because I'm thinking about moving there.)

Parent was being too harsh. As a designer, I don't think it looks that bad. It's not amateurish in any serious way, and it avoids the current cliches, which is refreshing to see. To me it kind of looks like cool design from, say, 1997, and

Not that this isn't interesting, but it seems a lot like these folks are doing fairly typical research into social behavior and calling attention to it by piggybacking it onto the buzz about online social networks.

I'm a big fan of Streem ( http://streem.us ), and I swear this has nothing to do with the fact that I made it.

"Maybe a partial explanation is that having a simple shared mental model makes network effects much more powerful. When we think about social software as a user, we don’t just think about the software, we also think about the network of oth

Aesthetics are pretty important to me but I think I'd be more impressed with a startup making creative use of a boring space than one working out of, say, a generically hip loft.

I'm sure the author knows what she's talking about and to some extent I agree with her, but humbleness is a useful quality too, in gifted people especially. Being skeptical about your own innate gifts makes you work harder in applying them,

Yeah, I totally agree. When you keep getting off on knowing you could do something instead of actually doing it, the evidence on which you're basing that knowledge starts to get pretty shaky.

I sympathize with mwmanning, and I don't think it's a matter of humility; I think it's that solving an interesting problem is often a much stronger motivator than the prospect of making money -- that is, running a business, as difficult and

I'm honestly a little stunned by the stagnancy of innovation in online interfaces. It's way beyond just laziness or hewing to trends -- it's virtually a total refusal to believe that we can do better. One of my goals right now is to develop

There's a lot of UI terrain we haven't explored yet, and AJAX makes more of that terrain reachable. It seems silly to suggest it's on its way out just because it's no longer the cool new thing.

In my experience what works best is making friends you actually like, and coding stuff that you and your friends want to use. Lots of reward and no alienation.

My site's still pretty small but I've got 1800 registered users, an upper limit of around 300 active ones, and 10 to 15 using the site at peak times.

Usability-wise, it seems fine. I'm not sure how useful it is, though. What's the value of sifting through six different sets of search results, as opposed to just using Google? If I don't see what I'm looking for on the first page of Google

Twitter is well suited to certain kinds of lifestyles, and pretty much useless for others. I don't use it because none of my friends use it, and I find it more cumbersome and limiting than other services, but if you run with a crowd with wh

It's a nice feature but I doubt it'll get used much. For sharing to happen you need to first create a space where people enjoy hanging out with their friends, and that's not really what Google Reader is.

This is basically right but you're wrong in distinguishing programming from other design tasks. There's never a "process" for design; there's only the meta-process of creativity.

Would what you're describing really be much easier than a "Buy this book at Amazon" link? There's also the issue of trust: people know Amazon. They might not be as willing to buy a book from a random website.

Montreal seems like the place to be if you're starting small. Vancouver might have a stronger talent base but their startup culture is a little top-heavy -- it's mostly VCs and angels spinning off their own ideas, whereas in Montreal there'

Yeah, the only really good era for written comedy was the 70s, when the National Lampoon had millions of readers. These days when comedy articles appear in the mainstream they're almost always in the fake news format, which is pretty rigid.

Hey, great idea. As a former comedy writer I think it's really cool you decided to focus on written content instead of the usual YouTube stuff; comedy articles are an underappreciated form these days. I agree with those who've said the desi
