I am a huge believer in the word of mouth method. I've been doing web design and programming for over 10 years and have not once cold called or advertised my services. I think there are two important aspects of "word of mouth" however. Firs

I'm shocked at the disdain people on HN have for certain tools. I was always taught that it's not the tool, it's how you use it. I think Panic is a perfect example of that axiom. Their website (at least the older versions) has been emulated

Other people have commented on highlighting the call to action, so I'll try to give some design feedback if you're up for it. The monotone greyscale makes it difficult for me to get a sense of the page hierarchy. Instead of seeing 4 distinc

Thanks for checking it out -- glad you enjoyed reading the results. I also suspect HN will be composed of mostly future thinkers, but our research points to successful companies needing all three constructs to operate efficiently. By the wa

I have a similar setup as you – work on a mac with a Debian testing box. I've always run a local server with PHP and MySQL to run things natively, but have been moving more and more to working on the testing box. My favorite software for th

I am always surprised at the way in which architecture as a profession is romanticized. I blame Mike Brady... I went through the process of getting my Masters in Architecture. It is a long and very arduous process and something you shouldn'

The rules ares changing for length of resume. In college, yes, it should just be one page, but that's because you most likely don't have any experience. The one page limit works because it makes you focus on the meat of who you are. However

Fair enough. Decent analogy, but not quite to the point. Land prices are adjusted over time due to quality of land, location, and surrounding. Domain prices are all relatively the same price new, but theoretically the next day someone can t

I really don't get where squatter prices come from. It's one thing if a domain is in use, has a history of high traffic, and has high potential through name length and/or brand potential. But a regular old squatting site that barely gets hi

Thanks for the offer. But in the spirit of HN, this question is for all of the self-employed people out there that might one day need to put together the ol' resume.

Thanks for putting the failures in perspective. I think my biggest challenge on that front is to represent the time I spend on those projects without showcasing the failure or leaving a time gap on the resume. Also, it would be great to be

I really liked the intuitive nature of your design work space. Rarely do you see a DIY graphic/layout space that is easy for the general end user to use. I was trained as a designed to use Illustrator and I feel like most online tools try t

I am formally trained as an architect and I believe there are plenty of overlaps between architecture and programming. In fact, it was a series of computer science programming classes in college that reinforced my desire to study architectu

It will be nice to see part two, but there is enough fodder in part one to talk about. There is no doubt recommendation engines are a great sales generator. But are they any good at what they do? Plotting points on a graph based on user rat

Interesting analogy. At the end of the day, however, what are we trying to achieve from this model? It seems like maybe the author is after faster production time. While this has its commercial advantages (as the author points out in his sl

Shouldn't we all be treating this like just another VC? Everyone seems to be caught up in the fact that it's money coming from Google. But at the end of the day, it's money coming from an investor. Obviously, because it's Google, they will

While this isn't the monetization approach I would take (for what it's worth) you do have to ask, how much is Twitter worth to you? Would you pay $10 a year? $5? $1 a month? Surely you must get that much value out of it? Take Facebook for e
