Creating empties with {} takes just 58% of the time as dict() [0.25 us, 0.39 us] because there's no need to LOAD_GLOBAL and CALL_FUNCTION. 'not not variable' is similarly faster than bool(variable). (not that I've run into this often in Pyt

IE really doesn't support this. For any real testing, you want a separate virtual machine for each version of IE. This was discussed; see wayne's comment, which links to Microsoft-provided VM images: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=353

My untested hypothesis is that your parents and peers expect you to act a certain way (based on your appearance) and many people accept these subtle nudges without resistance. So, it basically becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's "arbitrary", and not random at all. Some basic testing shows that the same dictionary keys will always lead to the same popitem order.

You would need a lot of real-world analysis to make this work right. Consider the case of 10 annoying dialog boxes that pop up in sequence, which the user presses enter to close. The no-focus-stealing OS thinks the user can't possibly respo

"Microsoft spent over $100 million a year[1] in the late 1990s, with over 1,000 people working on IE by 1999.[2]" (wikipedia) I think the IE7 team was less than a dozen people. IE8 is probably a bit more.

This is barely noticeable on faster computers, so many designers miss this. The browser has to re-draw the whole page because some of it scrolls, yet the static background doesn't.

The CLI is more than just the shell's capabilities. Microsoft expected people to use PowerShell with the same horrible cmd.exe, and ignore the multi-second startup times.

There are some differences between the 98 and 2000 look, but it might just be the default color palette. I would imagine it looks like 2000.

I don't find those two especially funny, just memorable. I read tptacek's comment as a general criticism of xkcd, without the implication that it must be funny to be good.

I like Vista for the proper 64-bit support, the user-level driver model, and the improved file dialogs. But I agree with all your points. Server 2008 has SuperFetch off by default, but then again it's not Microsoft's desktop offering.

Tip #2 is nice in theory, but styling button spacing in a cross-browser manner is nearly impossible. Tip #7 is awful. By the time the images load, the user could already be typing in another input box. If you must set focus, do it right aft

My speculation: because there are no drawbacks to yawning too much, we've evolved to yawn with even the slightest triggers.

If you are forced to take memory dumps to debug your database-backed application, or lock things to write out a line to a logfile, you are probably doing everything wrong. This reflects more on Jeff Atwood's poor choice of technology than p
