My dad bought us a commodore64 at a market. He did not get the tape drive, so it could not save any programmes. It came with a manual that demonstrated how to code in basic. I recall spending hours typing out code to get a ball bouncing ac

This answer is gold. I came to respond but this answer hits the proverbial nail on the head. You do not teach a kid to think, you provide and environment that allows them to. They will learn to do this on their own.

I just finished watching a Netflix documentary about an octopus. The kids loved it. It was probably one of the most fascinating documentaries I have ever seen. What a story & some amazing footage. I could not help but think that octopus

I came across a concept of “direct experience” with out going through normal meaning-making structures. Anyone have more details on this?

Eric, you are a smart guy. I think you should pay attention to the signal. Multiple people have mentioned a similar thing. I have had a similar experience. While it may be technically accurate that the “LTSE is open for business” My expecta

Anyone have a remarkable 2, and have they been delivered? If unhappy can buy it from you. I recall they said it would be shipping in August? My slot says delivery in November.

I think the reason thinner later is harder to act to bring about, vs pie now is due to uncertainty. Thinner later is uncertain, hence I think our brains naturally discount the future goal, with a preference for the immediate. what has worke

Social impact may be more sustainable. Think about a parasite that kills its host vs two organisms that exists in a symbiotic relationship.

I am not familiar with this terminology but it sound awfully like “means” and “ends” which I believe goes all the way back to Aristotle.

From the spec (8gb) it appears that NiFi was not needed. Were you co- locating zookeeper on the same nodes? Also you say it needed to be run periodically? It’s supposed to be a long running service. If you need something that you can spin

Ashby’s work on self-organisation [0] is a must read. I think it was he that defined the concept. http://csis.pace.edu/~marchese/CS396x/Computing/Ashby.pdf

It is only fair. If other businesses that are selling items which are “non essential “ and have to close, it would not be fair for amazon to continue since they will have an advantage. Here in South Africa regulations were put in place so o

We need to realise that the internet/social media shutdowns will now become normal to “control” populations and ensure people cannot mobilise or protest. Governments are putting in place the methods to avoid protest. The problem with t

Actually I don’t think so. We need the social interaction, to belong, to be part of something larger. we are inherently social, and we inherently “mimic” and absorb from those around us. Watch a child learn. My 1year old will watch me. Then

“The most lasting and effective way to change your life is to change who you’re surrounded by.” I think this is somewhat obvious. I have been hearing this from my dad since I was a kid. “Choose your friends wisely, they become your destiny”

I would not be surprised if both these books are referring to the same thing, from similar sources just using different ways to describe the same concept. I have watched a talk by Yuval Noah Harari, and read a few blog posts about his idea

Personally I found the style very different between the expanse and the three body problem trilogy. The expanse seems “lighter” or less hard. The last book, deaths end i found to be particularly “hard sci-fi”.

I had this exact thought as I was reading this. I wonder if ML could be used to speed up the process and look for anomalies - both appearances and disappearances. Someone in our team did his PhD in machine vision. Will have a chat with him

I think it goes much deeper than people choosing to work on fashionable problems. Here are my thoughts 1. The more defined and mature the problem space is, the more the assumptions that underpin that field are taken as a given. 2. These ass
