I think it's being downvoted because it comes over as uncharitable and even petty. A computer scientist is one who practises and/or studies computer science, which she does. No, that doesn't require a CS degree, though it hel

Probably academic research (similar to what I do now), but in more of a moonshot attempt. A bit more mathematically involved than what I currently do. More open source contributions. More larpwriting and fiction writing. To some extent this

I'd recommend you tell people more about what you're doing, who you are, and existing code/site. If it's open-source, no need for stealth mode, and you're much likelier to attract people that way.

Very, very well said. This kind of thing risks turning dating into the filter bubble we see in online news -- but worse, because it's a more important part of life. It also ignores how attraction works. Sure, someone may find blond peo

Absolutely, try your idea of only internet at work. If that impairs your social life too much, maybe allow yourself messaging applications but not sites. I've generally found there are a couple of main culprits for me -- Reddit, HN, Tw

It is "extreme"; it's an extremely bad idea. It's unhealthy and unproductive. For emergencies, some people have to do it, but ideally it shouldn't happen.

What a shame... I came to his computer work quite late (mid-2000s), learning of him via his appearances in the This Week in Tech podcast. But then I realised he was the author of Lucifer's Hammer and other classic sci-fi. He was a grea

So far it seems pretty peculiar to London (at least within the UK). Of course, London is a huge part of the UK: something like 10% of our population live here.

I put this last in that bullet, because IMO its likely effect size is smaller. Basically, there have been a number of studies looking at the health effects of sat fats (especially cardiovascular health) and they've had mixed findings.

From my understanding of general health evidence, your best bet is: * Avoid smoking and excessive drinking (excess is easier to reach than you think!). * Eat a healthy diet (not too many calories, not too many carbs, not too much saturated

Catch, like you mentioned. It's a single-header library that slots very nicely into my cross-platform C++ programs.

Have you ever read much about land value taxation? I think a well-implemented LVT could do a lot to help with these problems -- though I'm no expert, it seems a lot of economists rate it favourably.

Did you start with the first book? I wouldn't have thought it would start with that stuff, because Mars isn't colonised at the start of the series. IMO it is better than that most of the time, in any case.

I highly recommend Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. Great scifi books about a vaguely realistic Mars settlement, and the cultural/biological changes that occur.

This is really cool! I found a couple of projects online (e.g. http://www.randombio.com/webcam.html ) where people tested out their webcam counter by using a smoke detector as an alpha source, and had some success.

I believe this quote is apocryphal. AFAIK it's actually quoting a play by Aristophanes that poked fun at Socrates -- a play that put these words in his mouth.

I'm not in a start-up at the minute, and I should make it clear that I've not yet worked in a senior role at one. That said, I feel like most start-ups would be happy to reach the level of success where this is a problem!

Rental search that makes it easy to find a pet-friendly place. I live in London, UK, and although we have a few good property search engines (Nestoria, Zoopla, etc), none of them have a simple way to sort between pet-friendly and not.

What are some examples of the ideas that need a new technology, if you don't mind sharing? I'm interested to hear whether the ideas are really pie-in-the-sky, or they're just a bit too tricky for practical implementation in t
