I think we are over hyping PhD progams. Especially in computer science. From what I saw after graduation: The top 10% of the students got huge offers to join big companies. The "Street smart" students are usually joining startups.

97% reduction? Not really. Given how the price of BTC/ETH is going up, they will soon have to report pretty much every user that put more than a couple hundred dollars initially.

For the past decade I made it very clear during interviews that I value work-life balance and that in fact it increases my overall productivity. I was never told to fuck-off (And I'm in SV). In fact any company that "requires"

It took me a while to understand this also especially in the US where everyone complain all the time they work 80 hours a week, especially in tech. In my experience, only a very small fraction of those claiming to do >45hours a week are

This. I find it very difficult to complain as a coder given the conditions at the moment. Companies battle to hire people and the pay is globally extremely good. Most of the time it is easy to get time off or to accommodate "errands&qu

Why does it feel like every choice for a phone is a losing choice nowadays: - "Pure" Android from Google (Pixels and co): You end up being controlled by Google and enclosed in their ecosystem. They manage and decide the ToS for ev

The black magic behind those complex communication pipes is what made me love computers back in the days. Ever since then I have been obsessed by networking and how It just works even though things are thousands miles apart. I'm still

Good point. Someone was making an argument the other day that a whiteboard algorithm interview is still relevant as it proves that you are able to sit down and learn your algorithms again. (Basically it proves that you are able to learn whe

Vagrant is definitely wonderful to quickly provision VMs across multiple hypervisors, but that's where I also see it as a hack. It will not always replicate exactly what you need on each hypervisor, and so many times you will end up wi

Exactly. That's the name of the game today: You need to spend a week refreshing your algorithms and data structures and you can certainly "crack" those interviews. I never got the point of it, but I see it as a ritual...

Is anyone really using Vagrant for anything more than quick tasks on your local dev machines? I always perceived Vagrant as a hack.

I came here to say that. I still don't get that huge fascination all over the US for mattresses. It is a whole market fuelled by fear.
