I'm surprised no one has mentioned Ragel: http://www.colm.net/open-source/ragel/ Ragel generates very fast code, is modular by design and has good error handling. It supports both compiled and scripted langua

It would be interesting to compare this with coroutines/fibers, and it would also be interesting to know how latency is affected. In my experience, thread pools introduce latency.

One case where I found IPv6 great was on my home network. All my systems have IPv6 addresses and I can ssh into them from a remote network which also supports IPv6. I don't need any NAT. But, I do have an IPv6 firewall of course.

I'll give a counterpoint based on my own experience. When I travelled to the US, from New Zealand, to interview with a certain large company, I actually managed to mis-read road signs, in particular traffic lights, on a number of occas

If you are looking for an inclusive gender-neutral variant, "ass" is probably the best. Although I tend to avoid such language in general as it comes across as immature and detracts from an otherwise valid argument. I'm all f

The ARC (and L2ARC on an SSD) give you the best possible IOPs for read operations given the limits of the underlying hardware. Asynchronous write operations are cached to memory before being written to disk, often sequentially. For synchron

The simple answer to your question is no. The more complex answer is that over time as you write more data, ZFS will re-balance the distribution of data over the available zdevs.

This advice isn't actually totally correct. If you build a volume, you can add more zdevs to it. My suggestion is to avoid RAIDZx and go with mirrors. To add more storage, just add another pair of drives and add it to your pool. Here i

Here is a decent build that I recently did for my home server: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/any-help-with-m... It uses the Intel G4560 which supports ECC, and is very inexpensive. It's low power to

I've got 6x 4TB WD RED in a ZFS RAID10 (3x2 mirrors). I get about 500Mbytes/s read and write, on average. You start getting into 10GbE territory pretty easily with even consumer drives and ZFS. With SSDs, you'd quickly need t

About a month ago one of my websites was being scraped. They were grabbing JSON data from a mapping system. I replaced it with a GZIP bomb. It was very satisfying to watch the requests start slowing down, and eventually stop.

If you don't like tabs, converting them to spaces is trivial. You could even add git hooks to do it automatically.

The title is click-bait and over-dramatises the issue. The choice of APFS is that a filename is a sequence of bytes. Nothing more, nothing less (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here). If you want to see the kind of issues that pat

It's entirely possible that a broken power supply might cause the ram to silently corrupt data, in which case, ECC would help.

We develop server based hardware-accelerated renderers and compositors for web applications, e.g. dynamically generated product images. None of those targets are relevant. Think ImageMagick but done on hardware + 3D geometry in many cases.

You can write platform/hardware specific extensions to Vulkan, it's very easy and anyone can do it.
