Happy birthday! If you made it this far, your life expectancy is a lot higher now. That means you should probably start thinking longer term -- whereas in your late teens you thought about college, in college you thought about your twenties

Why is Google forced to provide customer support* for something they provide for free? * they do provide customer support, it could obviously be a lot better

There are so many alternatives to email -- Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Proton, iCloud, etc. How can you argue with a straight face that Google has a monopoly on email?

I would love to know what HN's python folks are using for new projects these days. I've looked at FastAPI before and it has some nice features like asyncio and pydantic integrations. But it doesn't have any official users lib

That's if you're implementing SSO on your own, which most folks don't do. Most SaaS using SSO in their apps will use Auth0 or Okta. Dropping third-party cookies has implications for these integrations: https://supp

Unnecessarily combative comment. There's a reason why radio and television stations are among the first things seized in a coup. Broadcast media is crucial .

I can't recommend this YT channel enough: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9vLsnF6QPYuH51njmIooCQ It's so, so much better than "Grokking the System Design Interview", which I find infantile at best

Because electricity is free. And internet is also free. And the rooms to put the servers are also free. A/C is free. And backup generators are free. And diesel is free.

If dogfooding is the main reason behind using Angular, it's a bit ironic that <10%? of teams at Google use Google Cloud over Borg.

Ron Fricke, the man behind Baraka and Samsara, was the director of photography (and writer, editor) for Koyaanisqatsi. I would keep in mind how novel Koyaanisqatsi was for its time, and that Baraka and Samsara are mere evolutions on a revol

I just did this operation on moving from 12x 4TB drives to 12x 16TB drives. I did it over 12 days (each resilver was ~24hours) and it wasn't too cumbersome. Considering how often you're going to grow your pool, it doesn't see

This is unnecessarily complex, you can just offline a drive, remove the disk, insert the new disk, and replace the offline drive with the new disk. ZFS will resilver the new disk.

This is great advice. > Document every critique you make to create a code guidelines document. It helps more to have as much of this as possible in lint and style checkers, so there's no arbitrariness at all.
