I've always been rather dubious about Penrose's approach to consciousness. He seems to be of the school of "Put two metaphysically mysterious things together, in the hope that we can explain one in terms of the other."

If you remove the caret, it matches function names; with it, it won't work since there's no way to match the beginning of the string at that point.

I decided to run a small test to see whether the comic's title was always the longest title of any image. Here's the screen scraper I wrote for it: http://gist.github.com/13315 I discovered that following comics don't have the longest tit

The way it works isn't terribly reliable, since it counts on the comic being the element on the page with the longest title. A quick View Source reveals a dearth of helpful hooks like classes or ids, but the comic image is the only one with

Quite. Surely we would be better improving the curriculum so that children have a better chance of learning to think critically and imaginatively about all classes of problems, rather than adding narrow vocational studies. A world where eve

SunSpider is used pretty widely; it claims to be a balanced benchmark, but where the balance point between different language features lies will depend quite a lot on what kind of application one happens to be writing, so it's more an art t

How absolutely ghastly. I'm not sure which I hate more: the copy, the style or the illustration.

When people at large (i.e., a majority of people likely to buy the phone) think that "the Internet" is the same as "the web" (which is what they meant), it's not really surprising that they phrased it the way they did.

As someone who basically thinks CSS is a great idea, I have mixed feelings about this article. On the one hand it's a rather silly rant, and is downright wrong in several places. On the other hand, CSS has a number of irritating limitations

The only time I've had problems upgrading was when, running off the trunk svn build, a new tags system which changed a bunch of database tables was introduced and then scrapped shortly afterwards. Repairing the tables was annoying, but that

I can't agree with this. What should be important is what one says, not where one happens to say it. If what one has to say can be expressed effectively in 140 characters, what's wrong with using Twitter publish it?
