I don't think you need to censor quotes on HN.

It doesn't really work like that. Total Stock Market index funds are fine investments, which hold around 4000 US stocks. And since they are usually market-cap weighted, your exposure to each small-cap stock is small, so pump and dump i

I skimmed the comments here, and never saw the real answer (to what I understand the question to be). Even though it was public knowledge, I had some extra insight from working for a large Usenet provider. The New York Attorney General star

I never understood this suggestion. I've tried it, the toilet paper shreds and gets stuck everywhere, including my hands. It's a huge mess.

The environment it runs in (your PC, operating system) changes over time. Yes, backwards compatibility is a big priority, but eventually something is going to fall out of compatibility. It's also known as bit rot.

I've dealt with retailers who had to remove clothing products for legal reasons, usually copyright complaints. It could be a knockoff of another design, or copyrighted characters on the clothes. If there is any backdoor way to get to t

I have some small experience as a study subject. We were given detailed information ahead of time which included what was under study, and whether there would be a placebo group. I guess the assumption is that since both groups receive the

I know a guy who buys cheap cars, fixes them, and resells them. All through craigslist. But whenever he buys a car, even one he plans to keep for himself, he immediately lists it with a huge markup. Just today he got an offer for $3200 on a

In both cases, Google Docs and Medium, the website does save your work as you go. What is being discussed is the HUMAN habit of pressing Ctrl-S.

One good alternative I've used is socketpipe[0]. It handles logging into the remote server, setting up a listener, and then piping the data over. But, that tunnel still isn't encrypted. So, either encrypt your data first, or setup

Speaking generally, rsync is faster than straight copying if the files partially exist in the destination first. If they don't exist, or they've changed completely, rsync is slower due to the checksumming on both sides.

I drove on a highway like this (in America) this weekend. It's not really shared. It's just that your side will get two lanes for a while, then merge down to one. Then the other side gets two lanes for a while. There are frequentl

That comment was meant for the Giganews account, and wasn't intended to convince anybody else. It happens that I know the part I quoted is true. And I would not be surprised if Nick did contact the FBI. The rest is nonsense, of cour

That's not really true, and not what people mean by "timing the market." Thinking the market generally goes up and one should invest in it is not timing, no matter when you think it. Repeating the phrase "all time high

Oh, I should have clarified. I was thinking of Roth 401(k) vs Traditional 401(k). I do have a Roth IRA because there are income limits for the tax deduction from a Traditional IRA. And as you say, any tax-advantage is worthwhile.

For myself (young-ish, high-ish income) I've determined that Roth is a bad deal. Conceptually, Traditional and Roth are about equal. Paying taxes now vs paying them in retirement is a wash, all else being equal. But with a Traditiona

Don't time the market. Timing the market gives you two chances to screw up -- when you decide not to invest, and then when you decide the time is right. Or to put it more concretely, there is a long chain of "all-time highs"

Exactly right. In my use cases, it's best to tar over ssh initially. Then, if I ever want to update the copy, rsync.

They're both useful. tar over ssh is very fast for large amounts of data. rsync is only fast if most of the data already exists.

rsync is slow if the data is not already on the destination. tar over ssh is fast, and tar over socketpipe is even faster but not encrypted. I'm not aware of any attributes that tar doesn't preserve.

I have experience with many open source VPN servers. The purpose is a bit different -- we provide a VPN service to home users to encrypt their internet traffic. But the same problems should apply. OpenVPN is the most compatible with a var
