When we migrated Parse from Ruby to Go, we started with two parallel efforts: 1. I built a Go implementation of resque. This let us swap any async process. Things that needed async tended to benefit from Go's speedup. 2. We also moved

I typically summarize it as "go takes twice as long to write and half as long to debug. Since you spend a lot more time debugging code than writing new code, this is a good trade-off"

Are you asking whether you have to use Uber? It gives you a list of providers. If you're asking whether you can ask maps to switch into the Uber app, I'm not sure there is a lot of value (you can pop open the app and your ride app

I'm not sure this deserves a down vote aside from failing to provide context. The major app compatibility problems in vista boiled down to two things: 1. Apps that hard coded which OS they supported (the number one compatibility fix w

This is actually a great teaching tool. Firebase (my team) uses them for in person code labs. It's a huge time saver to know that everyone already has access to a Linux machine with the developer tools and helps the class jump right in

It still seems safe though to set up rules where domain ownership could automatically grant ownership for a protocol. E.g. Facebook.com:// or just Facebook:// if .coms were allowed to be dropped.

I often ponder company culture and how what's good for the customers and the users can often be at odds. I find it interesting that "cookie licking" is terrible from the inside, though whenever there are overlapping products

As a matter of HN etiquette, whenever I recommend a book I always give an Amazon referral link. It's a technique I picked up from an HN alum and gets me in the mindset to always be selling. Is that something that would have been discou

I remember this issue with S3 files and being unable to configure certificate correctly. What's the correct steps to get that to work? Also, clever find that there's a side channel on left vs right swipe. What caused these payload

Had to help my family get rid of malware over the holidays. One was a bit tricky: chrome thought that a corp policy required the malware and a default search handler. Turns out you can set registry keys to disable removing extensions (thoug

[disclaimer, I work for google] I’m sure if Google made such a list there would be another HN article about how Google is evil and trying to cut out competition.

A professor in college explained it in a way that works for me: C is about the type. When you say "int x" then "x" is an int. When you say "int * x", then "* x" is an int. Humans figure out the type

The halting problem is used as a means to stick one's head in the sand. The halting problem imo is fundamentally uninteresting. A question that's almost as useful and is answerable is whether a program might not halt. Using your
