"Soon" on an evolutionary scale could still mean hundreds if not thousands of years. For example, wood is a great food resource for fungi, but it took millions of years for wood-eating fungi to evolve after wood.

A more rigorous curriculum? Maybe no. But better teachers? Absolutely yes. There is more to teaching than lecturing in front of a blackboard.

A lot of really good educators leave the field because the money is garbage. Pay peanuts, get monkeys. Given the central role of education in our society, teachers should absolutely be paid more.

Probably not, if only for reasons of inertia. Git plus third-party review tools (like GitHub) is more than "good enough" for most purposes. I used to work at FB, and while sapling is quite nice to use in practice, without the int

Small email providers are doomed, though. If they don't have an address from their ISP, just about everybody just gets a GMail account, or ProtonMail if they're more privacy focused. I'd like to host my own mail but it'

If Reddit isn't going to value its communities, it's just going to turn into a clone of the bloated corpse of "I Can Has Cheeseburger", an endless stream of cat pictures and short videos, posted and reposted. High in tr

Minorly profitable, though, not "giant IPO" profitable. Reddit has investors who clearly want their money back with a nice return on top.

Sounds like the real problem is that those questions were drowning out all other content. Personally I don't object to moderators setting rules that reduce noise. Or, to put it another way, moderating.

It's a first step. I agree that in the longer term it will be necessary for continuing action, but you start with a warning shot, not scorched earth.

The choices are not just "third party apps get a free lunch" or "third-party apps pay $millions". Even Selig admits there's a middle ground where API pricing is reasonable. Or maybe just restricted to Reddit Gold

Some subs held polls, and in every one that I saw, the strike was quite broadly popular. I think characterizing this as a few power mods throwing their toys out of the pram is unfair.

The most obvious answer is that killing third-party apps is intentional. It would have been a reasonable compromise to cut off API access to users who don't have Reddit Gold, but that's off the table, because it doesn't juice

I don't see it that way. That was just a proposed business transaction: reddit pays a fee, and in exchange, the Apollo dev doesn't comment publicly on the API changes. What's the threat, real or implied? The alternative i

Pre-pandemic, you never heard of tech companies doing across-the-board layoffs unless things were going quite poorly. There might have been staff reductions, but they would be targeted: a company axes an entire division, e.g. Now it seems

People have been using third-party clients to access Reddit for more than 13 years. When you have that kind of history, a change like this is difficult to seem like anything but a rug-pull.
