That isn't really what aircraft autopilots do (intend to do a full point A to point B without human intervention). Texting and reading won't become legal if the driver is still responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle.

They are using public bus stops, and allegedly create traffic backups which is also an effect on public infrastructure. To what extent they impact traffic I don't know. I'm not saying whether there is a net gain/loss here,

I have to name two in a tie: Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, and Masters of Doom by David Kushner. Both Jobs and John Carmack have been huge sources of inspiration since I've read these books, and in very different ways. And that effe

Is there anyone on HN who doesn't aspire to the minimalist, tiny (usually urban) home, outsourced lifestyle (by that I mean, laundry service, car rental, eat out vs cooking, etc)? I'm genuinely curious.

What is the point of this post? To say that journalism is a worthless endeavour? It would be just as easy to go cherry pick some quotes that say just the opposite without providing a substantial argument.

Isn't this what stops a lot of suits against broad surveillence-type actity - that since court proceedings are public the suit is rejected because it would reveal classified information?

I really don't think the FAA is going to be in a panic over stifiling innovation after this. Probably more people are annoyed with the idea of drones buzzing over their property.

Handbrakes are almost always mechanical cables, but they're almost definitely not enough to stop a car under high engine output. They're mechanical and not power-boosted (see comments on how much force is needed on the brake peda

This kind of thing makes me never want a car without a keyed ignition and to a lesser extent (and for other reasons), a clutch pedal. Heavy machinery should have a hardware-based killswitch. I'm kind of amazed this isn't regulated

I'm surprised at the current number of likes/dislikes for Lisp and Scheme. Most of my work, including at home, work and in the past at school, was in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, SQL and some mixes of Shell and other minor dabbling
