Dynamic linking works just fine. You don't want your every app to carry its bits of glibc inside, same for libx11, same for openssl. And it's definitely more polished than gems or jars or whatever other languages have; maybe only perl/cpan

You know when you update your data. Therefore, you invalidate your cache when you update your data. Timestamps help alot if you're paranoid, also.

You can cache cache that in-memory! Because you've got a persistent app server.

The real problem here is PHP/MySQL, not the dynamicism per se. A blogging platform based on Rhino (EcmaScript) on JVM hosted on virtualized server (or in cloud) would easily resist slashdot effect. And using file-based storage it would be s

Most languages support multilingual identifiers those days, but I don't see anyone using them. I've wrote a haskell program with greek symbols as variables once, it was fun and neat. There's a language 1C which is fully in russian - identif

It's interesting why the smaller the language is, the dialecty it gets. For example, Russian has no dialects worth speaking about, but Basque has four, for less than million native speakers.

Didn't say Facebook is dying. Traditional IM is suffering, IMO: Twitter, Social networks and Skype ate its users. And, paradoxically, even Email. Maybe it's just me who use them less and less? No idea.

Died to what? IM? IM is dying on its own. Whatever Facebook this week? Spare me. Wave? It's too hard. Twitter? How would I fit information in 140 chars and why? Email has no successor technology.

Was Perl backed by a major vendor? MySQL? FreeBSD? If it's already backed by a major version, you're already late. So slow.

Sorry, but we do want to use actual useful objects (including built-in types) no matter what you'd say. It's viable, it's useful, it's done, it works.

I disagree in full. There's much more than 2k-4k lines in a good javascript library. You've got years of bug fixing/perfomance improving and months of fixing browser bugs. For example, try writing your own css selection framework and I guar

I read quite a few female writers and they're good and relevant. Bujold would be an obvious example, and much more local authors. I'm going to visit a fantasy/role playing convention in two weeks, and I think female participants would accou

Most screenshots here are from first pages. Most good looking sites have distinctively looking first pages and much cleaner internal pages with more text, less clutter and unrelated images. Therefore it might be biased.

Why would you need a tiny bittorent image when the first it would download would cover the fattest image, ten to one? Come on, bittorent is for flacs and movies.

This is not enough: you should also set up references to other objects (by id) and deal with underscore_database_names vs camelCaseJavaNames.

Populating objects isn't the hardest part, but it's the most useful part. Writing object populating code is tedious, copy-pasty and uncool. And having that, you don't really need ORM, naive or not.

What would you replace them with in statically-typed languages? You see, in database you've got tuples and nothing else, and in program, you've got objects and nothing else. You have to convert one to another this way or that way. Talking a
