I think bringing Rust into Linux was a really bad idea. IMO Rust has yet to prove it isn’t another overly complicated C++ waiting to make projects almost incomprehensible to understand. It does not provide the same easy ramp up that C provi

I spent years wasting time on Haskell and wouldn’t recommend it unless you find joy in the purely academic. I’ve never found a practical application for my knowledge and no one has ever paid me to write it. I suppose if I were willing to ta

Rebase (non-local rebase) based workflows are just awful. The best git methodology I've seen is (surprise, surprise) in the Linux kernel. I can keep everyones tree as a separate tracking branch and use git work trees to develop against

Some of those companies have like 1 or 2 projects in Rust out of thousands. I mean most of them are running millions and millions of lines of Java and C++. Java and C++ aren't going away - ever.

At this point virtually everyone agrees that dynamic type is only good for scripting and cross-domain code, not for being robust software applications. Considerable effort has been spent over the years adding typing back to dynamically type

I'd rather give my CC info to Apple than to the world's largest personal data and ad farm tbh.

It's 30 bucks because you're paying via Apple. Google hates the Apple cut so they are now charging an extra 8 dollars a month for not giving them direct access to your credit card info.

The price hike on Youtube premium is insane. I guess it makes sense when every other product you try to bring to market ends in failure. If Google is the creme de la creme of software engineering companies, full of absolute geniuses, why ca

Its unfortunate Docker came out of the VC space instead of being a hobby/research project with no intentions of making money. Solomon Hykes could have been the next Linus Torvalds and Docker could have been completely encompassed by a

My coworker at Meta and kernel memory management expert Chris Down already wrote about why you need swap: https://chrisdown.name/2018/01/02/in-defence-of-swap.html

I've heard this argument many times from Rust enthusiasts, most of whom do not work in C, C++, or even write system level software. Of the kernels that I have worked on, the Linux kernel core is very high quality C (even if many of the

Sorry, I don't normally work outside of the kernel. To me vm is a common abbreviation with a well understood meaning.

If you don't need to care about vm, you probably should be using a GC language. If you do, you certainly need to understand vm.

I have primarily worked on kernels written in C during my career, but I read through the official Rust book and wrote a small microkernel using Rust and my opinion is that Rust is already everything I hate about C++. It's already a hug

This is why Rust will eventually become the next C++ - it's becoming just as bloated with type theory, a cumbersome syntax, and will eventually ignite a begrudging dislike by the people that have to find a subset of the language to mak

Correct, I'm looking for a tool that manages a large list of individual hostnames, I do already extensively use my ssh config to automatically apply the right credentials etc. to the hosts once I have the hostname I want.

I would try to game plan meeting new people by increasing your exposure to new groups and activities, come up with a list of short and long term goals and action items. I started ramping with meetups I found online.
