I personally find Searl's (and other "neural correlates of consciousness" people, such as Koch) arguments more generic and deep than all this simulation-emulation-dna-blah-blah talk. It is perfectly possible that our brain is the minimal th

See, all these monstrous old companies such as IBM and HP, they hire pure scientists such as Chaitin and this guy, and every once in awhile it pays off. I have feeling, yonger companies, with their own research departments, they are still v

I think, perhaps it is true, that beauty can not be always described by formulas, at least "innovative beauty". However, to have good convenient rules of the thumb, to let less artistic people be able to quickly create something not really

You can look at several additional metrics: - Industrial output per capity - Germany waaay in front of USA. - Amount of cars produced per capita - Japan and Germany way in front of USA. - Electronics industry is still doing very good howeve

Yes, but if you look at amount of industrial output per capita, you'll see that it is smaller than Germany's.

Yet it is pretty silly to say that USA is an agricultural country. That means there is a lot creativity going in the agriculture to keep it so efficient. Even if there is innovation going on in the jet engine, there is still a lot of space

Creativity does not appear from nowhere. Of course, it is great to foster it, yet, with loss of industrial knowledge, less and less is left to be taught to people. I do not buy fairy tales that there is abstract creativity you can teach peo

Again the reason why creativity goes down - nowhere to apply it. There is no industry left in USA - the only way you can apply your creativity is by creating something, but your creations are not going to be competitive - chinese workforce

Read the article. Feels like Republican propaganda, even though it is not. The reason why scientists cannot find jobs is the lack of industry in USA. Industry is often employer for scientists (on-site chemists, physicists and so on).
