This is the first time I've heard anyone favorably compare San Diego to SF. I've always heard that compared to SF, San Diego is dull, boring, and suburban. Care to explain why you like it more?

It's obviously tough to make sweeping generalizations about people, but if you study psychology you will learn that all humans(and indeed other animals) share certain innate drives that are part of our genetic makeup. The need for sex, repro

Wow, my comment must have hit a nerve. I wonder if the people downvoting me have ever experienced being in a good relationship. I don't mean meaningless sex, although that is great too, I mean an emotionally involved relationship. All I'm s

Isn't making a personal, emotional connection with another human being pretty universally considered an important part of being human? If you're one of those people who look down on the pursuit of sex as not worthy of their time/intelligenc

It would be interesting to learn what they did to get to the front page of CNN. Excellent PR firm? Techcrunch/YC coverage? Or just hard work and ingenuity by the founders?

I briefly tried this too, data mining thousands of high-paying keywords and looking for available exact match domains, so I didn't even have to worry about SEO to get to #1. I still couldn't make this profitable, even to cover domain/hostin

Well, for one, some of the most brilliant coders I've ever spoken to have been in Russia. A lot of incredible web technology we in the startup scene don't hear about comes from Russia. Unfortunately, most of it is used for spam/fraud.

Google gets paid for clicks, not impressions. As long as the same percentage of searches terminate in clicks on ads their revenue will remain unaffected. The only conceivable impact on ads is that traffic will shift from long-tail to shorte

It's not hard if you can get traffic, either with a good product or good marketing or SEO. Think of it as a numbers game, get as much traffic as you can and monetize. About a million pageviews a month will probably get you to $40K a year.

Google's domain is pointed at Google nameservers. If you point a domain you control to your own nameserver, you can direct it to any IP you want, on any network.

If you've ever studied persuasion, for example Cialdini, you'll find that there are very specific, concrete concepts and techniques presented. The type of theories Cialdini presents can very easily be taken into practice.

Fulfillment is relatively cheap and you benefit from significant postage discounts. There's no reason you should be shipping products yourself.

These types of e-commerce businesses are not something you hear I'm trying to do something similar right now as a side project. I'm not selling t-shirts, but the economics are similar. If you actually research it, it takes very little start

True, there are obviously good and bad business people just like there are good and bad hackers. I'm just against the blanket "we don't need business people for our startup we only need hackers actually building things" attitude that seems

I think it's more inconvenient truths like "Your startup is overwhelmingly likely to fail". Those types of pragmatic posts/comments generally are hushed over in favor of the more exuberant ones.

You're in luck- web developers are a very easy audience to target online due to the wealth of content aimed at them. Stop screwing around with niche stuff like BuySellAds and get into some serious high volume media buys, especially on tutor

I assuming parent is correct and he gets 150K uniques a day, which is probably on the high side. However, I maintain that getting $10 CPM for a finance site, even one without an ad sales team, is trivial.
