I am surprised that nobody mentions IBM DB2. In the bank where I work, the banking system uses DB2 on mainframes. Our data warehouse uses SAS.

Oh the memories :-) That article is from about 1990. At that time it was widely referenced in neural network research. I also used it as a reference in my masters thesis in 1993. Edit: Changed year..

They don't write software, they test it. They type in endless amounts of test data, and manually test all sorts of applications.
