IBM still “invent computer hardware” (e.g. POWER/PPC CPUs are still being developed) and have been doing it more or less ever since “computer hardware” as a concept was commercialized. You’re probably aware that the PC itself is an IBM

Funnily enough in many countries (India, China?) iPhones are definitely considered luxury/premium (compared to the competition, i.e Android).

Are we not allowed to use the article as a springboard for conversation? Am I obligated to only restrict myself to what the author wanted to talk about without expanding the realm of discussion with the people on HN?

How does this not answer your question? If the XPS was more expensive even before adjusting to inflation, than the answer is no: the macbook was not the most expensive computer I ever bought (both adjusting and not-adjusting to inflation)

My old Dell XPS was actually slightly more expensive (even before adjusting to inflation - I was researching online and at the time it was the most recommended high-end pc laptop). And macs retain value a lot better than PCs - you can likel

I'm not trying to make a any gotchas. Yes, if all you need is MS Word and a web browser you can use a 10-15 years old laptop, I don't think this surprises anyone here (in fact its why most people these days use phones instead of P

Honestly, the new MacBooks are faster than any desktop I ever had - I don't feel a need to sacrifice mobility for more than that.

Nice. Now try to do the same as (some types of) programmer or 3d modeller or video editor. The newest MacBook with an M2 chip compiles and runs my projects drastically faster than the 2015 Dell XPS Skylake-i7 laptop I used to have and the G

I agree that the open source section was a bit strange and not really necessary for the article's actual focus - when I read it I immediately thought this will create a completely avoidable flame-war.

It was more like a polished graphical off-shot of Angband. But I wouldn't call it a "version of it" anymore than I'd call Battlefield a version of Doom (or any platformer a version of Super Mario), they are simply games

Anecdotally, in Berlin almost all street view pics are from 2008. It's actually kinda nice to take a tour of the past that way sometimes!

I'm not saying it's a good idea medically, just that "having first child at 33" is hardly out of the ordinary, it's pretty much normal and expected these days. I wouldn't really expect someone with only a B.Sc.

Technically yes, but in major western cities these days the professional class tend to start having children in their 30s. I know plenty of people here that had their first child in their late 30 or even at 40 (both women and men) - probabl
