Thanks jacquesm! The more I look into the problem, the more challenges I'm finding. A friend of mine did this for his master's thesis back in 2002, so I know it's not impossible, but he had a strong background in EE (whereas I'm a relative

good tip! I wonder why cmd-opt-ctrl doesn't have any other numerical bindings... it seems like there's an opportunity to create a usability convention, but instead, this function is sitting by itself on an island named "8".

The "nice gesture" idea is way off. By default, you need to assume they haven't opted into any sort of promotion for facebook or for your site. Treat it like private information, since their comments should be assumed to be private. Sinc

While I think this is an interesting move, and that there's probably a problem worth addressing somewhere in there, I don't think the FTC has the right angle with this move. Specifically, I think this regulation is intended to target the "l

Agreed. Whatever the motivations of the agents referred to in the article, it is still the case that "inappropriate" laws were applied to (presumably) non-criminal activity. It's just speculation on my part, but my theory had to do with th

My own take on this is that, while it's possible for a bunch of countries to invent a new pseudo-currency, it's probably easier to use an existing pseudo-currency, and I think the IMF's XDR is a likely candidate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wi

I definitely agree - and really, I want my statement to be falsified, since it will be so much worse for it to be confirmed.

I've been suspicious of Murdoch's motivations in the past (vis a vis the particular bias of Fox News) but this for-pay initiative seems like a testable proposition. If Murdoch can decide, one day, to charge for "news," and if this sentiment

Yeah, but arc nevertheless is a Lisp, and for whatever reason, news.arc is certainly using '=' to perform assignment.

:) Well, I noticed the issue of karma comes up more than once per year, and the thresholds are mysteriously different each time. I was about to ask (since I was certain I had read the downvote threshold was 100) when I realized I could

I realize I should also point out what the regexp is doing, since it's pretty simple and it's the meat of the recipe. It starts off by looking for the open paren that is the beginning of any LISP expression. Next, it looks for an assignment

Topcolor is the hex code of the bar across the top of HN. Check this out: http://news.ycombinator.com/topcolors It's a neat little page that displays a bunch of colors and hexcodes from live users' profiles.

I might as well point out that grep -n will give you line numbers in the output, so you can quickly reference the source code to figure out a little more from the context. You could use grep -C3 to get some context right on the command line
