I don't argue that it would work but when you do that you're still sending all the data over some data link. For example if I have 1.5TB of VM and only 10-20Gb changed today I'm still sending everything to a remote storage. S

I love Proxmox but the absence of incremental backups is very annoying. If you have a large vm whose contents don't change much your options are limited as storage (edited: and bandwidth) is not infinite. I also don't want to use

Somehow I never imagined an xps hackintosh but I want to try with mine now. If it works reliably you could have great hardware with a good OS and a decent price.

As usual you shouldn't depend on Google for anything (especially if it's free) but I wonder what motivated them to charge for reCAPTCHA. For Gmaps I could see the reason: we have the best map so you're going to pay a lot of m

Not a Pi but the rockpro64 has a pcie port in which you can plug what you want (a sata card for example). I made a nas with one 3tb drive and zfs. Zfs was a bit difficult to install but now it works really well and the power consumption is

I'm happy they decided to backport the fix for cyrus ! Some mails could become hidden on update from cyrus 2.5 to 3 I didn't want to use backports for a mail server and after the maintainers decided to not patch the SSL bug in the

You can use backblaze B2 with duplicacy. I backup my machines to my NAS and the NAS itself to B2 using duplicacy. The free version is command line only (with text config files). It works really well and B2 prices are reasonable ! They have

I got burned pretty badly by those as I bought 12. I now avoid seagate if possible because I'm pretty sure they knew their disks were faulty. Even if they didn't know they didn't handle the whole fiasco in a good way.

This makes me worried about the future of processors. I know bugs have always existed and sometimes they were very serious but they seem to have increased in frequency in the last few years. Is it just me or it's an actual trend ?

What I remember from biology class is that nerve cells are very long (up to ~1 meter) and when they are cut they die. I wonder how they transferred nerves given that. If someone know and can explain I'd be very thankful !

Damn I read the article a bit too fast, neither does the rockpro64 but it has pci-e and the manufacturer sells a sata card. An usb3-> sata adaptater is ok if the USB bus is reasonably fast. I care more about being able to update my board

I'm very happy about that ! I needed to build a low power Nas with ZFS and the only board that could do the job (gigabit Ethernet, sata IO, powerful 64 bits processor, 4GB of ram) was the rockpro64. Sadly I discovered after receiving i

You seem to be missing that China is more or less a dictatorship. No matter how much I disagree with the German government I'm sure I won't disappear or get sent to a reeducation camp. I value that a lot and so are a lot of people

Damn it feels super weird to hear something about my childhood village on HN. There is also a recently closed refinery there. The funny thing is that they never budgeted the decommissioning cost when it was built. So there is no money to do

The battery acts as a big capacitor to smooth the voltage and depending at which speed the alternator is turning I'd expect the voltage to vary wildly. This may make weird things happen especially on newer cars

As long as you disable the disk write cache. I had a home Nas running zfs on a unreliable power supply and I lost the contents of the Nas a few times before I disabled the write cache. Ext4 seems to tolerate this much better.

I'm not a parent so take this advice with a grain of salt but I think holding your kids accountable for their actions can go a long way. Like if they break their phone you give them an old flip phone so they are still reachable but the

I don't know if you count the Samsung tab s3 in the competition but the latency seems to be a bit above 100ms. You get used to it but it's annoying and I've tried all the apps to take notes I found and they are all not great.
