The biggest mistake is not knowing your audience. Is the diagram for marketing? A sales proposal? A business person using the product? Technical peer? If you don't know this, you don't know if you have the right level of detail.

It probably does happen. It’s slop all the way down.

Yep, I get the reasoning. It's just a terrible experience if you're used to gmail.

Many small companies operate without any formal board meetings. Not every company is a Delaware C corp.

Most people only care about compliance if it stops them from closing a deal. I was at a startup where some enterprise said we needed a SOC 2. The founder talked them out of it by giving them a discount if they'd waive the requirement.

I worked at a place where someone made the deliberate decision to migrate from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 / Outlook / whatever it's called today. "Most of our partners use Microsoft", so we have to suffer wit

You also need to ask: How much do mainframes cost? They were engineered for backwards compatibility and reliability, with built in redundancy you don't find in consumer hardware. AI models are changing every other day. I have to rebuil

Based on our current trajectory, it seems more likely everyone will upload everything to the cloud and pay perpetual royalties to access their own data.

I'm seeing an unfortunate pattern where someone wants to write an email, and "asks Claude", producing a needlessly verbose response that the recipient doesn't even want to read. The slop is obvious. This behavior is be

In general, I think those use cases are fine. But... AI generated content is a slippery slope. Someone earlier today asked me to "review" a 50 page document they had completely generated with AI yet obviously not reviewed themselv

The "premium" movie channels had tons of paying subscribers. They didn't need ads. It was very much a selling point for those channels.

Not entirely true. The "premium" channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Bravo, The Movie Channel, etc.) never had ads. Then there were channels like Nickelodeon that originally had no ads, then added them in the mid 80's. I rememb

If you believe benchmarks, maybe this is true. But I've done my own experiments and it is absolutely not the case for real world usage. The quality of output from Claude (Sonnet) was much higher than Kimi K2.5.

Same. It's been 6 years of "work from home", starting mid-March 2020. It has become very, very old. I would love to find a local startup that embraces hybrid work.

You didn't look at the code, so you don't know what you're really working with. Maybe it's total slop. This is concerning since you're dealing with security and presumably API keys to third-party platforms.

This does not feel like 250K lines of complexity. Have you looked at any of the code at all? You likely have mass duplication, copy-pasta everywhere.

You might be surprised. In 2008, when the App Store first came out, I became an iPhone app developer after reading one book. I already knew C, so Objective C wasn't a big leap. Between my own apps and consulting work, I had a pretty go

I dumped DOCSIS the moment fiber became available. With cable, I'd go through periods of 1% to 3% packet loss. It also affected the neighbors, so it wasn't my "old modem" as the tech once tried to claim. When it was at i

An LLM might take 5 minutes, or 20 minutes, and still do the wrong thing. Rarely have I seen an LLM not "know what to do." A coworker told it to fix some unit tests, it churned away for a while, then changed a bunch of assert stat

In my experience, consulting companies typically have a bunch of low-to-medium skilled developers producing crap, so the situation with AI isn't much different. Some are better than others, of course.
