I don't know, I grew up in both the bay area, and a more rural part of California, and there was definitely an agricultural bend once you moved to an area where 60% of the graduating class ended up not going to college. There is a little bi

That sounds like a bit of a stretch. American public education focuses on learning the basics so you can be then trained by either your occupation (ala factory worker, etc.) or by your next institution (university). On top of that depending

Seems cool. I wish you'd render the about text box for products with Markdown or something though so the links were clickable.

I'll agree that saying "better safe than sorry" is probably the wrong way to view life, but taking what other people say with a grain of salt lets you question what people say more and come to your own decisions about life. Also, "people su

I generally live by the words "people suck." Then when you see such disgusting behavior as this, it is not surprising. Even better though, is when you meet truly kind people, it is a surprise and pleasure to work with them.

Very cool, nice work. You mention dealing with syncing data with the server. Is there anyway to cache that data locally? Maybe let me still vote on pictures even if I'm not on the net and just sync my votes next time I connect? I don't have

I really don't want to get in flame war with you here, so I'll just say that as an employee, the thirty some odd students I talk to every quarter seem happy once the class is over. Also, I was there when we were initially approached and too

Art. High quality photos from a large portion of museums. Maybe something like 500 pieces from each major art movement and time period? Then chuck wikipedia on there, and maybe a dictionary.

iFixit runs a program with a few universities, including Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where students are given recycled devices (such as an old cell phone or laptop) to write repair guides on iFixit.com. iFixit also provides all of the tools r

I work for the company, so color me a little bias, but the point of these teardowns has always been threefold. First, learn about hardware design. See how a company was able to make the latest cool new device. Second, some people are intere

Probably the same reason Californians talk about the entire state no matter where the quake hits the state. Also, Al Jazeera is reporting 4+ million homes are without power in Tokyo.

This is interesting. What I'm curious about though, is how does this workflow scale to thirty developers? 100? I tend to believe with six people or less, you can really work together with any system and it will work fine. Some will obviousl

Your post reminds me of some statistical data I saw a while back that says that Americans have a very poor view on the actual economic status of those around them and the rest of the country. link: http://blogs.berkeley.edu/2010/09/30/weal

I liked the article, but I'm curious about the title choice. Why prepend it with 'OM:'? Because the domain is shown on the right, do I really need two sources of authenticity?

I've heard that Twilio gives all of their employees Kindles and a ebook stipend. That seems nice. We have a company "library" which any employee can borrow or add to, which is nice. But in all honesty, a good chair, a nice monitor/mouse/key

Interesting redesign. In 2009 they did a previous redesign, which Chris Wanstrath from GitHub critiqued at RailsConf http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUUvq48Gb3w (Around 17:45). It looks like they've improved since then, but I couldn't even
