I second that. Perl was my go to language, scrips, spreadsheets quick tests. Python3 does it now for me. The hardest thing to change was the one liners, but getting rid of that habit actually forced me to store more things in source instead

I think you might be confused. One of the nice things to happen to OSS was the availability of kernel ( Linux kernel that is ) and git ( ... ) and both set very open models which allowed the OSS to trive. Github allowed for using git witho

In other words there is no size fits all there is even no size fit two . All those workflows are based on the management o the organization it self .

Another vote for Arch. However you will like it if you want to embrace linux and by that I mean learn some fundamentals which you will need to install Arch. If you just want to run linux, Ubuntu will be better choice .

Part of the advantage for me is that dwm is written in C and pretty much it comes with no dependencies

I don't get it .The "ugly " picture at the beginning is what you get in the end . No matter how many design steps you have.
