I was seriously in the market for a heat pump system for the upper floor of my home. The current oil fired furnace system works but oil is expensive and the heat from our pellet stove doesn't reach up to the second level very well. The

They're specifically marketing to car manufacturers in the press release video. Which is unfortunate because I don't need more non-haptic buggy interfaces in my car. The technology itself is amazing even though the holo-cam appear

I've done the admittedly rough cost benefit analysis and for me it doesn't work out. There's hidden edge cases in each of these and other cases. I did optimize in other ways to make up for the inefficient choices though. I ha

Is there an option to pay and to self host? Recently my boss asked me for things to spend money on to use up some budget at the end of the year. We can't use hosting services but would pay for support or an "enterprise" editi

Gentoo was the first distro that I grokked. The way they walked you through the build system (honestly can't remember if it was official docs, community forum or what) was just the right balance of teetering on the edge of everything c

"Another possibility is that developer efficiency improves so much that the code written 10 years ago is easier to completely rewrite today, than it is to maintain and extend." This seems completely false to me and I'm curiou

Doesn't have to have anything to do with probability. If fewer resources are spent repairing and re-building and the last hurricane event is out of people's minds then I would expect there to be more building resulting in more dam

I don't have aphantasia, quite the opposite, I see things constantly in my head and have to work hard on my environment and myself to be able to focus on the present moment or what's in front of me. I also learned about it from so

My limited anecdata does not support this. The kids who are the best on my children's sport teams are the ones who play club sports in addition to the regular season, who go to sport camps and are on multiple teams. It's clear why

Strongly disagree with this. If a class (at any level) is strictly teaching "the subject" then that is a very good issue to raise by a student or anyone else. Great teachers don't just teach the subject though, they teach the

Not really a side project as I was trying to get traction on my ideas at my former employer. I do contract work for a pretty niche industry and after you've done a couple big implementation projects, you've seen 80-90% of all user
