Always amused me: Sky used to use a pint glass on subscription sports package for pubs/bars. But some sneaky publicans were sticking pint glass stickers to the corner of their screens to fool inspectors... So now the glass has a differ

Same. One of the best things about HN is the discussion. When others downvote because they disagree, people end up afraid to share an unpopular opinion.

Controversial opinion, but I'd have little problem with Google (for instance) having anonymised access (and obviously there is _a LOT_ of caveats here) to medical data (again, for instance) in exchange for digitising the NHS (again, fo

For sure. But we all experience things differently, right? Hence being able to debate it. Doesn't make my opinion any less valid.

Respectfully, I don't think it is, and the tone of your reply suggests you assume it'd go badly. Other than being (perhaps) slightly more expansive as a question, I really don't get what the big deal is. It's an opener.

No, I'll try it though. After a small talk introduction I'll usually use (the fairly similar) "so what do you do with (/how do you spend) your days?!" - or sometimes "time" and sometimes "_like_ to do

I'm not sure I entirely agree. I think it's a bit like saying "steak is not the same as a hamburger" - they're not, but they're both beef and both a good meal. I think if you define interviewing in the strictes

Appreciate this is to a pretty ridiculous degree, but isn't this pretty much the story across the board? Anecdotally I heard about some of the conversations with the government and adult industry regarding the UK porn filter. It was so

I'm with this all the way. Appreciate this article is from 2016, but surprised the physical sale is still compared to Spotify streams. They're very different and I think Spotify is far more like radio with choice (a bit like Netfl

Indeed. And much like coding (I suppose the most personal example I can use), you have to concentrate (hard!) those first few times - maybe even be in the mood to begin to understand it, and then it becomes kind of second nature. You know w

A lot of the people I know that listen to death or black metal are very scientific - physicists, mathematicians, etc. I've always figured people are attracted to the music for two reasons - Firstly because they tend to be social outlie

The most frustrating Spotify problem for me is the link between mobile / desktop play queues. I've moaned about it many, many times on the forums and there's a giant thread of people moaning about the same thing, but it'

Haha, sorry! I'll take the blame for the spelling. I should have googled. Have also passed on the 17m/cm typo. Good catch. A 17m pot would indeed be implausible. As for the other one, I have no idea. The name comes from the grower

Yes - some people are very, very social. There are a good number of people that have drinks towards the end of the day - like any other office-y environment, you just need to take the leap to talk to people. Of course I've seen people

Yes, I totally understand. Hence why I put 'victimless crime' in inverted commas. The perception around stealing music is not the same as stealing the handbag, or a loaf of bread - that's the point.
