Was hoping the actual linked interview would clarify this, but it too didn’t seem crisp: would it be the cost of buying the car new + $8.50 per hour? Or is the idea that I never have to buy the thing outright, but I could get access to a s

I participated in February Album Writing month for the first time in over a decade, and successfully wrote 14 songs in 28 days! A variety of genres, but mostly lower key (bossa nova, ballads, etc) https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl&#x

This kind of thing might never hit mass-market (read Facebook-level) appeal, but I think if one branded it as an open-web network for creators (as opposed to Facebook, which is for mere “consumers”) you might reasonably avoid the hosting pr

This would require a level of coordination and leadership at CBP that we just haven’t seen, at least under the current administration.

More speculation on my part: I wonder if rather than a fail-open decision, it’s just how they designed local dev to work and the failure of the provider caused the app to behave as if in local dev mode.

Not applicable to the author’s reasons for building, but I wonder if “I built my own SSG” is the equivalent of “I built my own CMS” for this generation.

And I certainly still benefit from such incentives, even in the nordics (private health insurance, time off beyond the 25 days mandated by law, etc are still a thing in a competitive labor market here). I just see more benefit personally wh

Similar for me, but in Sweden and I'm only a couple months in. My ideal societal contract would be something like this: I want to be free to focus my energy on my work, relationship, and interests. I want the state to focus on programs

Cool to have some “observability” on this, but it’s not the most relevant metric. I’ve heard of (and experienced myself), much, much longer delays on envelope/letter mail, but have heard of fewer delays with packages. Perhaps this is a

Although you shed some of this type of maintenance overhead, you are still taking on the burden of maintaining business logic. The difference is that now, you lack the vast and mature test automation ecosystem to help manage that cost, and

It's interesting to see so much commentary (on HN and elsewhere) about Apple having lost its way with "pro" users from a hardware perspective (touchbar, butterfly mechanism, lack of a desktop tower)... But not see this as it

I'm personally in the same boat (and use a philosophically similar JS-based framework called SailsJS instead, right now) For me: I need services that support the UI, as well as a public-facing API with basically the same data. I don&#

Thanks for the detailed response! It all makes sense, and it sounds like y'all are getting good advice. My gut take on docker vs. config management came from the trend of IaaS providers moving higher up the chain in the services they

I may be at a place where this would be useful, so I signed up! That being said... At this point, one-click (or one command or one PR open) pre-production environments are almost table stakes for PaaS offerings. This kind of functionality

My wife is a woodworker by trade and this metaphor is on-point. I return to my original point: if your company is working on something where "production" is novel/unique/a differentiator, then you probably need to invest

I once landed a job as a web developer in a marketing department where IT was gatekeeping production hard. Although all the code was in git (the real git), deployment involved a magical shell script someone in IT had written ages ago. Only

This problem exists in monolithic data stores and codebases too. It's not as if independent teams have absolute sovereignty over their table schemas. Schemas evolve as the needs of the product change, and that evolution will always ou

As an end-user of databases, I hope in 50 years time, there will be no meaningful distinction between OLAP and OLTP DBs. We spend so much time and energy copying data around into specific data stores to solve specific problems / answer
